项目背景与定位
英国历史植物园培训生计划（Historic and Botanic Garden Training Programme，简称 HBGTP，前身为 Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme “Hee-Bee-Gee-Bees”）由 English Heritage 于 2006 年创立，最初在英国国家彩票遗产基金（National Lottery Heritage Fund，NLHF）的资助下启动，初衷是把英国历史与植物园世代积累的园艺技艺系统地传递给新一代专业人才。
组织与管理
HBGTP 由 English Heritage 直接管理，由 HBGTP Manager Elinor Davies 负责统筹合作花园、项目团队、学院讲师与自由职业导师，同时与 Professional Gardeners Guild（PGG）、RHS 等外部伙伴保持密切协作；日常行政、宣传与网站运营由 HBGTP Administrator Emma Newey 承担，2024 年 9 月任命园艺界资深人士 Alan Titchmarsh MBE 为首任项目大使，进一步提升了项目在英国园艺行业的公众影响力。
培训模式与课程结构
项目以一年制全职带薪实习为主线（Stream 1），同时设有经 Capel Manor College 协作、可获得 RHS Level 3 Diploma 的两年制 Stream 2 进阶通道；学员被分配到英国历史与植物园名园带薪工作，每周可获半日学习时间，需完成 3 份书面项目、1 份每日技术日志与每周植物识别测试，年薪不低于英国国家生活工资（National Living Wage），毕业后可获 HBGTP Certificate of Completion。
合作花园与项目规模
二十年来，HBGTP 已累计为 350 多名学员提供实习岗位，覆盖 100 多家合作花园与 300 多位花园团队导师，实习地点北至因弗内斯，南至怀特岛；2026 届共 13 家英国名园提供 17 个实习席位，包括 Audley End、Chatsworth、Fulham Palace、Helmingham Hall、Picton Castle、Trentham Estate、Wrest Park 等 Historic England 与 National Trust 旗下遗产花园。

项目核心资助方为英国国家花园计划（National Garden Scheme，NGS）三年期 £125,000 捐赠，每年可支持 7 名学员，同时获得 Royal Horticultural Society Bursaries Scheme、Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust、Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust、Worshipful Company of Gardeners of London Charity 等长期资助；2026 年正值 20 周年里程碑，新版 HBGTP 网站即将上线，标志这一英国历史与植物园园艺人才传承平台迈入新阶段。
About the Programme
The Historic and Botanic Garden Training Programme (HBGTP) was founded by English Heritage in 2006 with initial support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, originally known as the Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme. The programme is dedicated to passing on the horticultural skills of Britain’s historic and botanic gardens to a new generation of professional gardeners.
Management and People
The HBGTP is managed directly by English Heritage. Elinor Davies serves as HBGTP Manager, coordinating placement gardens, programme staff, college lecturers and freelance tutors, while working closely with partners such as the Professional Gardeners Guild (PGG) and the Royal Horticultural Society. Emma Newey provides administrative support as HBGTP Administrator. In September 2024, broadcaster and horticulturist Alan Titchmarsh MBE was appointed as the programme’s first ambassador.
Programme Structure
The scheme delivers a one-year full-time salaried placement (Stream 1) within a historic or botanic garden, alongside a two-year Stream 2 route that combines practical experience with study blocks at Capel Manor College leading to the RHS Level 3 Diploma. Trainees complete three written projects, a daily technical journal and weekly plant identification tests, and receive a salary of at least the National Living Wage. Each year between 10 and 20 traineeships are available.
Placement Network and Reach
Over twenty years the programme has supported more than 350 trainees at over 100 partner gardens with the support of more than 300 garden team members. Placement gardens have ranged from Inverness in the north to the Isle of Wight in the south. The 2026 cohort is hosted across 13 prestigious gardens including Audley End, Chatsworth, Fulham Palace, Helmingham Hall, Picton Castle, Trentham Estate and Wrest Park, with the annual Graduation Ceremony traditionally held at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire.
Funders and 20-Year Milestone
The HBGTP is supported by the National Garden Scheme (NGS) through a transformational £125,000 three-year pledge, together with the Royal Horticultural Society Bursaries Scheme, the Barbara Whatmore Charitable Trust, the Worshipful Company of Gardeners of London Charity and the Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust. The National Lottery Heritage Fund provided foundational support at the programme’s launch. The HBGTP is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, with a refreshed programme website planned to go live later this year.
