Organizational Origins and History

The American Daffodil Society (ADS) is the authoritative non-profit organization for daffodil cultivation and research in the United States. The society originated from an article titled “Who will Join a Daffodil Society?” published by Paul Frese, then editor of Popular Gardening, in October 1953. This article received over 400 responses, leading to an organizational meeting held at Chevy Chase, Maryland on April 9, 1954, where the American Daffodil Society was formally established. On January 22, 1955, the society’s organizational structure was completed with the election of Carey E. Quinn as President. The American Daffodil Society was officially incorporated on February 20, 1958.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of the American Daffodil Society is to be an internationally recognized non-profit association bringing together individuals, organizations, companies, and universities to promote widespread interest in daffodils and advance research in their culture, breeding, preservation, diseases, pests, testing, and exhibition. The ADS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational charitable organization supported by memberships and donations. The society is open to everyone—from hobbyists and beginning gardeners to experienced botanists and daffodil experts.

Platform Ecosystem

The American Daffodil Society operates a comprehensive network of daffodil websites: the main website (DaffodilUSA) provides general information; DaffNet is the society’s online discussion forum; DaffLibrary is a free online library; DaffSeek is a daffodil variety database with photographs; and DaffTube is a daffodil presentation website. Together these free resources form a complete ecosystem for promoting daffodil knowledge. ADS membership spans 48 U.S. states and multiple countries worldwide.

Publications and Scholarly Exchange

The society’s first activity was developing publications, evolving from occasional mimeographed sheets through the small Daffodil Bulletin to today’s beautifully enlarged quarterly Daffodil Journal, featuring color photographs and articles contributed by national and international daffodil enthusiasts. The Daffodil Journal is now recognized as one of the leading publications for daffodil news and views globally. The society holds annual Fall Forums and Board Meetings, with the 2026 Fall Forum scheduled for November 12–15.

Display Gardens and Awards

The ADS Display Garden Program was established to showcase a wide variety of daffodil cultivars to the general public, educating visitors on effective use of daffodils in landscaping. The society currently maintains 21 approved display gardens and continues to expand the program. The ADS also presents prestigious awards including the Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and President’s Medal to individuals and institutions making outstanding contributions to the daffodil cause.

Youth Programs and Local Societies

The American Daffodil Society places strong emphasis on youth education in daffodil cultivation through its dedicated Youth Program, offering resources ranging from coloring sheets to classroom biology projects. The society maintains 31 local daffodil societies across the United States, promoting daffodil culture through these grassroots organizations. The ADS operates an online webstore offering daffodil-related books, merchandise, and resources. The society accepts donations, sponsorships, and offers patron membership options.
