PGT is based in the United Kingdom and serves working horticulturists across the UK and Ireland.
Eligibility & Application
PGT awards are open to professional gardeners working in the UK who lack the financial means to fund their own vocational training. Applicants must already be employed in horticulture and the chosen course must be directly relevant to their current horticultural role. Unemployed applicants or those planning a career change are not eligible, but PGT signposts alternative funding sources and first-role guidance.
Awards & Course Coverage
PGT funds three categories of training: academic qualifications such as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) courses, practical skills training including pesticide application certificates, and specialist programmes covering permaculture design, garden history and management. All awardees are required to submit a written report with photographs after completion, which is used by PGT to promote future applications and report back to donors.
Governance & Trustees
PGT is governed by a Board of Trustees chaired by Stephen Anderton, a former National Gardens Manager at English Heritage and long-standing weekly gardening columnist for The Times. The trustee team includes curators from the Garden Museum, head gardeners of English Heritage properties, RHS horticultural advisors and head gardeners from major heritage gardens, combining academic, curatorial, heritage and hands-on practitioner perspectives.
Funding & Reach
As an independent charity, PGT is wholly reliant on voluntary donations and legacies from individuals and organisations, with no government grant funding. Since its foundation in 2004, PGT has supported more than 750 working gardeners in the UK to gain new skills and qualifications, covering RHS Level 2 courses, garden history study and specialist practical training, and continues to raise the professional standard of frontline horticulturists across the country.
