Company Background and Historical Evolution

W. Kordes’ Söhne Rosenschulen GmbH & Co. KG was founded on 1 October 1887 by Wilhelm Kordes I in Elmshorn, just north of Hamburg, originally as a horticultural nursery and market garden before concentrating on rose breeding and cultivation. In 1919 the firm relocated to Klein Offenseth-Sparrieshoop in Schleswig-Holstein, where breeding has continued under the name W. Kordes’ Söhne ever since. Wilhelm II and his brother Hermann II built the company’s international reputation: Wilhelm II formally launched the breeding programme in 1920 and produced ‘Crimson Glory’ in 1935, the first rose to receive the James Alexander Gamble Rose Fragrance Award (1961); Hermann II handled sales for decades. The third generation (Reimer and Werner Kordes) and the fourth generation (Wilhelm III, 1953–2016) steered the firm into cut-rose breeding in the 1960s, producing the iconic ‘Mercedes’ floristry variety. In 1990 the company decided that all garden roses had to be naturally disease-resistant and stopped applying fungicides in its trial fields. Today the fourth generation, Tim-Hermann Kordes, and the fifth generation, Wilhelm-Alexander Kordes and John Vincent Kordes, share responsibility on the board of directors.

Breeding System and Product Lines

The current breeding programme is organised in three product lines. Garden roses (Gartenrosen) cover climbers, shrubs, ground-cover and miniature types, with health, disease resistance and low maintenance as the primary selection criteria. Cut roses (Schnittrosen) target both the equatorial highland production areas in East Africa and South America at 1,600–3,400 m elevation and temperate local markets such as the Netherlands, balancing vase life, stem length, head size, pack rates and disease tolerance. Pot roses (Kordana®) are bred for indoor and balcony use. Within garden roses, the Parfuma® fragrance range has received the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s Deutscher Innovationspreis Gartenbau (Innovation Award for Horticulture), and the company holds more ADR (Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung) awards than any other breeder — resistance to black spot (Sternrußtau) and powdery mildew (Mehltau) is the central breeding target. On average, a new variety takes five to seven years from first cross to market introduction, with at least two years of greenhouse and field evaluation in the main production regions.

Sales Channels and Buying Options

Private customers in Germany and across the EU can order garden and pot roses directly from rosen.de, with payment via Amazon Pay or PayPal Checkout (including invoice purchase via Ratepay); shipping costs are tiered by plant value, free above €140, with surcharges for orders containing Stammrosen (standard roses) and separate tables for other European countries. For professional buyers, the Erwerbsgärtner area on rosen.de requires a valid European European VAT identification number at registration and offers both bare-root (wurzelnackt) and several pot sizes, with a customer-specified delivery week for production planning. Internationally, distribution is handled by a network of general licence holders (General-Lizenznehmer) in more than 30 countries; new varieties undergo two years of in-house screening in the greenhouse before being sent to representative regions such as East Africa, South America or the Netherlands for local climate trials. Customers can also use the company’s Ros-o-Mat® selector, which ranks matching varieties by answering six questions about site, use and fragrance preference.

Location and Customer Contact

Headquarters and all breeding activities are located in the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein, in Klein Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, about 30 km north-west of Hamburg. The maritime climate of the region allows selection under realistic open-air conditions: parents that perform reliably over several summers in Sparrieshoop without major disease tend to give descendants that also succeed in temperate markets across Europe and beyond. The company is registered as a GmbH & Co. KG at the Pinneberg local court at the Pinneberg local court as a commercial partnership. Customer service and sales enquiries are handled through the contact page on the website, with office hours Monday to Thursday 8:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:30, Friday 8:00–12:00; press and general enquiries can be submitted through the website contact page. The on-site Schaugarten (show and display garden) is open to visitors during the summer months.

Knowledge Content and Media Resources

The website carries a comprehensive knowledge section covering planting, pruning, fertilisation and the most common rose pests and diseases. The Pflanzenschutz/Schädlinge page describes the symptoms, causes and prevention of black spot, powdery mildew, downy mildew and grey mould, advising gardeners to prioritise ADR-rated or otherwise leaf-health-evaluated varieties, to avoid overhead watering and one-sided nitrogen fertilisation (e.g. pure horn shavings), and to use chemical fungicides only within a 10-day emergency window after the first symptoms appear. On the cut-rose side, the company publishes the trade-offs it makes between vase life, stem length, head size, pack rates and disease tolerance, and notes that a new variety typically needs five to seven years from crossing to first commercial planting. Product photography is produced by an in-house team, and the site provides both an A–Z variety index and detailed per-cultivar descriptions covering habit, fragrance intensity, disease rating and recommended use, supporting both retail customers and professional buyers when assessing varieties before purchase.
