Nursery Overview
Ernst Stöckmann Baumschulen is a family-run nursery located in the Ammerland region of Lower Saxony, Germany, on the Westersteder Straße in Bad Zwischenahn. The nursery was founded by Ernst Stöckmann and is currently managed by his son Klaus Stöckmann. It specialises in rhododendrons, azaleas and mountain laurels (Kalmien) — a relatively rare focus among northern German nurseries. All plants sold are propagated and grown on site from the nursery’s own stock; the nursery does not buy in finished plants for resale.
Range and Scale
The nursery maintains roughly 500 rhododendron and related cultivars at any one time, organised into four product lines: Rhododendron (about 320 cultivars — 115 large-flowered hybrids, 75 yakushimanum hybrids, 75 botanical hybrids, and 55 wild species and dwarf forms); Azaleas (105 cultivars, comprising 55 large-flowered deciduous hybrids and 50 Japanese azaleas); Kalmien & Companions (75 cultivars, including over 20 mountain laurels and over 20 Pieris, alongside Enkianthus and blueberries). The official list describes the Kalmien range as one of the most comprehensive in Europe, and the blueberry selection covers more than ten cultivars.
Quality and Certification
All plants originate from the nursery’s own propagation, and are shipped either as root-ball (Ballen) or container-grown stock. A trained team of gardeners and long-standing staff oversee each plant before despatch, supported by modern cultivation equipment. The nursery is a certified specialist member (Fachbetrieb) of the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BdB), the German nursery trade association, and follows its current codes of conduct. The nursery has maintained a website under its current branding since 2003, with copyright notices continuing through 2026.
Trade and Distribution
Although production is wholesale-oriented, the nursery also sells to private customers (Privatverkauf). Main customers include garden centres, retail nurseries and landscape contractors (GaLaBau); orders are picked and packed to specification, with shipments available on pallets, CC trolleys or loose-packed. Distribution relies on specialist hauliers, with a minimum order value in place; smaller orders are redirected to local stockists or handled on a case-by-case basis. Enquiries are taken by phone (04403 7317), fax or email (info@stoeckmann.eu), and high-resolution image material is provided to downstream retailers for promotional use. Seasonal updates appear on the @RhodoStoeckmann Facebook page.
Horticultural Value and Location
The Ammerland area around Bad Zwischenahn is one of the traditional centres of nursery production in northern Germany, where cool, humid Atlantic conditions suit rhododendron cultivation. The nursery lies about 3 km from Bad Zwischenahn on the road to Westerstede, with on-site signage. Garden planners, retailers and landscape professionals can use the site as a single source for evergreen rhododendrons, deciduous azaleas and mountain laurels, choosing cultivars matched to semi-shaded positions in loose, acidic soil.
