园艺文化与品牌传承

Founding History
White Flower Farm is a family-owned nursery based in Northwest Connecticut that has been mailing a wide range of ornamental plant varieties to gardeners across the United States since 1950. The company was started by William Harris and Jane Grant, who moved to Connecticut in the late 1930s and turned a shared gardening hobby into a small business. By the early 1950s White Flower Farm was regularly mailing printed catalogs, and in the decades that followed the nursery became known for introducing the latest hybrids from Europe, Japan, and elsewhere to American gardeners. Jane Grant passed away in 1973 and Harris sold the company to Eliot Wadsworth in 1976. Today the staff numbers several dozen, most of whom are professional or amateur horticulturalists, and the nursery continues to ship perennials, bulbs, shrubs, vines, amaryllis, gardening tools, and gifts to gardeners throughout the country.
Nursery and Production Base
The company’s operations are anchored at a nursery campus in Morris, Connecticut, where dedicated greenhouse staff raise many of the perennials, bulbs, and shrubs offered in the catalog. The Morris site combines production greenhouses, packing facilities, and display gardens that customers can visit in person. In addition to its own Morris base, the nursery works with a network of partner growers in New England and elsewhere in the United States, with White Flower Farm’s quality-control team overseeing varietal purity and plant health. Mailing operations are managed from the company’s postal address in Litchfield, Connecticut, and orders are shipped nationwide.
Core Product Lines
White Flower Farm’s catalog organizes its plants into perennials, peonies, iris, daffodils, tulips, specialty bulbs, shrubs and vines, hydrangeas, garden designs, and a separate gifts and décor section. Perennials are sorted by genus (Achillea, Agastache, Hosta, Echinacea, Heuchera, Phlox, Salvia, etc.), by common name, and by category such as pollinator-friendly, deer-resistant, shade-tolerant, water-wise, and North American native. Peonies are presented in their own herbaceous and Itoh sections, while the bulb program emphasizes daffodils, tulips, and specialty genera such as Allium, Fritillaria, Galanthus, and Muscari. The nursery also sells garden tools, planting accessories, gift certificates, and seasonal gift bouquets, and it publishes both print and digital catalogs each year.
Gardening Resources and Display Gardens
The website supports gardeners with a growing-guides section covering hardiness zones, plant care, shipping, guarantees, and customer service, plus a blog and short-form Quick Garden Tip videos that address seasonal planting, container combinations, pollinator plantings, and deer-resistant choices. The display gardens at the Morris nursery demonstrate perennial borders, peony beds, iris plantings, bulb combinations, and container designs that visitors can walk through during the open season, giving a direct view of how the catalog plants perform in a New England landscape. Online customer service is handled by email and an online contact form, supported by dedicated self-service pages for order tracking, hardiness-zone lookup, plant care, and the company’s guarantee.
Plant Selection Philosophy
Since the early 1950s White Flower Farm has positioned itself between international breeders and American home gardeners, seeking out the latest new hybrids while keeping well-tested classics in print. Lilium speciosum rubrum, featured in the Autumn 1951 catalog, remains a customer favorite decades later and exemplifies the nursery’s policy of preserving time-tested varieties alongside new introductions. The nursery now actively promotes pollinator-friendly perennials, keystone species, and North American native plants through dedicated category pages and zone-based recommendations. White Flower Farm® is a registered trademark of White Flower Farm, Inc., and the company continues to operate as an equal-opportunity provider serving gardeners across the United States.
