Overview

Dongguan Botanical Garden is located in Nancheng District, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, covering a total area of 468.5 hectares (7,028 mu), with a planned garden area of 200.5 hectares (3,008 mu). The garden sits north of Dongguan’s administrative center and CBD, west of Shuilian Reservoir, east of Tongsha Ecological Park, and south of Shuilian Mountain Forest Park, forming the ecological green lung of Dongguan’s core urban area. The garden is open daily from 07:00 to 20:30.

Operating as a public welfare Class I institution under the Dongguan City Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau, the garden focuses on plant conservation, scientific research, public education, and ecological recreation. It maintains a collection of 4,834 plant taxa (including infraspecific units), including 316 nationally and provincially protected wild plant species.

Historical Development

The garden originated as the Dongguan County Banling Livestock Farm in 1958, was reorganized into the Dongguan County Banling Forestry Station in 1962, and renamed Dongguan City Banling Horticultural Farm in 1986. In 1998, it was officially established as Dongguan City Botanical Garden, and in 2006 merged with the Green World Urban Park to adopt its current name. Construction proceeded in two phases: Phase I (2016–2018) and Phase II Phase 1 improvement project (2021–2023), establishing the complete layout of 16 specialized plant gardens.

Sixteen Specialized Gardens

The garden now features 16 specialized plant collections: Rock Garden, Litchi Garden, Plant Evolution Popular Science Garden, Orchid Garden, Shade Plants Garden, Herb Garden, Aquilaria Garden, Famous Trees and Flowers Garden, Rhododendron Garden, Australian Botanical Garden, Desert Plants Garden, Bougainvillea Garden, Colored-leaf Plants Garden, Rubber Culture Garden, Camellia Garden, and Camphor Garden.

The Famous Trees and Flowers Garden further contains nested gardens including Huafang Courtyard, Cherry Blossom Courtyard, Malaysia-China Friendship Garden, Rose Garden, Coffee Garden, and Hundred Flowers Ravine, creating a richly layered plant landscape system.

Scientific Research and Education

The garden serves as a National Natural Education Base, a member unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ National Key Scientific Research Joint Project for Litchi Breeding Improvement, a Litchi Engineering Technology Research Center base in Guangdong Province, a Guangdong Province Science Education Base, and a joint graduate training base with South China Agricultural University and Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering. Research focuses include conservation and sustainable utilization of rare and endangered plants from tropical and subtropical regions, Lingnan characteristic plants (lichi, aquilaria, etc.), and horticultural plants (Lauraceae, Begonia, Bulbophyllum, Dendrobium, Aloe, Rosa, Bougainvillea, etc.), providing scientific and technological support for the development of key regional botanical gardens in Guangdong Province’s plant ex-situ conservation system.

Species Conservation

The Litchi Garden serves as the garden’s flagship and distinctive collection, systematically collecting and conserving litchi germplasm resources from around the world, building an open platform for global litchi research. The garden also conducts field surveys and tissue culture research on rare and endemic species such as Dongguan Primrose (Chiritaandongguangensis), promoting ex-situ conservation and sustainable utilization of endangered plants.
