New Zealand Gardens Trust

Background

The New Zealand Gardens Trust (NZGT) was established in March 2004 as a trust under the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture (RNZIH) and became a fully independent registered charity in 2020. It maintains a national network of gardens that have been independently assessed and star-rated, so visitors can choose where to go with confidence.

Star Ratings

Assessment is the Trust’s core work. Every member garden is independently rated by qualified horticulturists and landscape architects against a single national standard. The top tier is Six Star (Garden of International Significance), followed by Five Star (Garden of National Significance) and Three Star (Garden of Regional Significance). Ratings are reviewed on a regular cycle and can be adjusted as garden condition changes.

Membership Streams

Membership is organised in four streams. Gardens are the assessed private or public gardens open to visitors. Collections are institutions that hold significant plant collections and share them with the public. Friends are individuals who support the Trust through subscriptions and events. Earth Star is the sustainability stream, recognising members who show leadership in kaitiakitanga and climate-conscious gardening practice.

Strategy to 2035

In 2024 the Trust published a ten-year strategy running to 2035, organised around four directions: strengthening the connection between gardens and the public, sharing horticultural knowledge, protecting important plant collections and landscape heritage, and building a sustainable organisation. The document was shaped by input from members, partners and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pass through member gardens each year.

Conference 2027

The Trust is hosting a conference titled “Ancient Worlds to Living Landscapes” in the Waikato and South Auckland region in 2027. The four-day programme begins at the Auckland Botanic Gardens and travels south through private gardens, estate landscapes and a Buddhist temple garden, ending with a Gala Dinner at Hobbiton on the final evening. The Trust also holds the Qualmark Bronze sustainable tourism mark.
