Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a public botanical garden and glasshouse located in the Schenley Park neighborhood of Oakland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, just a few miles from downtown. The institution has welcomed visitors since 1893, and is led today by President and CEO Richard V. Piacentini, with a senior team, board of trustees and trustees emeritus all publicly disclosed on the official site. Phipps is widely regarded as one of the most vibrant and culturally significant garden attractions in the Pittsburgh region.

History and Campus Scale

At the heart of Phipps sits a 14-room Victorian glasshouse completed in 1893, surrounded by a 15-acre campus that includes 23 distinct gardens. The historic conservatory retains its landmark exterior while housing a Tropical Forest Conservatory, seasonal flower shows, dedicated orchid and bonsai collections, outdoor gardens and extensive green roofs. The institution marked its 125th anniversary in 2018 with a year-long celebration that highlighted the building’s heritage, its plant collections, and its role in the community, blending the conservatory’s 19th-century architecture with contemporary garden design and education.

Sustainable Architecture and Environmental Stewardship

Phipps is internationally recognized for its Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL), widely considered one of the greenest buildings on Earth and certified to the Living Building Challenge. The campus pairs CSL with a LEED-certified Welcome Center and uses geothermal, solar, rainwater harvesting, and greywater systems to operate net-zero energy and net-zero water. Phipps is the founding member and managing organization of The Climate Toolkit, a collaborative network that helps museums, gardens, zoos and science centers address climate change. The institution also holds the WELL Health-Safety Rating from the International WELL Building Institute, accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and recognition from Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) for plant conservation, combining horticulture with environmental advocacy at an institutional level.

Education and Community Programs

Public education is delivered through the For Adults program and the Classes and Programs stream for children, families and school groups. Course offerings include gardening, floral design, botanical illustration in watercolor or colored pencil, and sustainable cooking in the state-of-the-art Botany Hall Kitchen; certificate tracks can be taken as stand-alone classes or combined. Phipps supports formal and informal K-12 programs aligned with state standards, recruits volunteers and interns year-round, and maintains a membership program that funds the institution’s nonprofit mission. The education team is reachable through edu@phipps.conservatory.org and welcomes personalized course guidance.
