苏格兰花园计划 1931 年由乔治五世国王在巴尔莫勒尔城堡创立

Founding in 1931 at Balmoral Castle for the Queen’s Nurses
Scotland’s Gardens Scheme was founded in 1931, when His Majesty King George V opened his garden at Balmoral Castle — the Scottish home of the Royal Family since 1852 — and cried enthusiastically, ‘I hope you’ll persuade everybody in Scotland to open their gardens!’ The charity was created to raise money for the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) to help support the training and pensions of the Queen’s Nurses, generally known as District Nurses, at a time before the National Health Service when there was little support for nurses. In its first full year (1932) over 500 gardens opened, raising the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of pounds today and doubling the district nurses’ pension.
Nearly a century of opening gardens for charity (1939–2024)
During the 1939 ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign many formal gardens were turned into vegetable beds, yet proceeds actually increased as extra petrol was allocated to mow lawns and transport visitors to gardens. After the National Health Service was formed in 1948, QNIS needs reduced and in 1952 The Gardens Fund of the National Trust for Scotland was added as a second beneficiary. In 1961 an annual 40% allocation to the gardener’s nominated charities was agreed. The 1971 40th birthday was marked with a 35-minute film and the first village garden opening at Midlem Village, Roxburghshire. In 1982 SGS won the British Tourism Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’; cumulative giving passed £3 million by 1995. In 2008 Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres became the third major beneficiary. The 2011 re-branding restored the name to Scotland’s Gardens Scheme. The Duchess of Rothesay attended the 85th anniversary at Winton House, East Lothian in 2016. Since 2018, 60% of Open Day takings go to the gardener’s nominated charities with the remaining 40% distributed to SGS beneficiaries. 2021 marked 90 years; from 2006 to 2024 Her Majesty The Queen retained the Presidency, formally as The Duchess of Rothesay.

Three core beneficiaries plus 250 small charity partners
Scotland’s Gardens Scheme itself is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), registered charity number SC049866, headquartered in Edinburgh. The three core beneficiaries are: (1) Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland, supporting community and primary care nursing; (2) The Gardens Fund of the National Trust for Scotland, maintaining important heritage gardens; and (3) Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, offering free psychological and practical support to people with cancer and their families. Perennial (formerly the Royal Gardeners’ Benevolent Fund and Orphan Fund) continues to help horticultural workers and their families in need. Through the gardener-nominated 40% allocation, around 250 additional small charities benefit each year.
Nearly 500 gardens, 200 volunteers, and the 2026 Guidebook
Supported by a small staff team, SGS is nearly 98% volunteer-led with around 200 core volunteers, working with close to 500 garden openers annually. Funding routes include Open Day ticket sales, plant sales, teas, single and regular online donations, cheques payable to Scotland’s Gardens Scheme SCIO, BACS bank transfer, and legacy gifts in wills. The SGS Bursary Grant programme supports horticulturists working or training in Scotland. The annual Scotland’s Gardens Scheme Guidebook 2026 (cover: Willowhill, Fife, shipping from 19 January 2026) profiles almost 500 gardens — stately homes to small village cottages, allotments to therapeutic and physic gardens, formal gardens to wildlife sanctuaries — highlighting National Plant Collections and Champion Trees, with more than 80 ‘open by arrangement’ private gardens exclusively accessible through the scheme.
