History and Nature
The Pennsylvania Bonsai Society (PBS), founded on May 3, 1963, is a non-profit corporation and one of the oldest bonsai organizations in the United States. As one of the pioneering East Coast bonsai organizations, PBS has played a significant role in the development of bonsai culture in America since its inception. The society’s purposes are to promote interest and enjoyment of bonsai, make information available on the culture and history of bonsai, promote the collection and exhibition of bonsai, and provide interaction between bonsai fanciers.
Industry Influence
PBS is an independent, regional organization with active members from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Since its beginnings, PBS has maintained a close working relationship with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society—a relationship that gave the Philadelphia area its first bonsai exhibit in 1964 and continues today with the society’s presence at the well-known Philadelphia Flower Show.
Early members of PBS were instrumental in forming the national group, the American Bonsai Society (ABS), in 1967. PBS hosted two ABS national symposia in Philadelphia, in 1969 and 1976. In recent years, PBS has joined with other organizations from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to form a federation known as the MidAtlantic Bonsai Societies.

The society’s current leadership (2024-2025) includes President David Downey, Vice President Bob Mahler, Treasurer Bob Finley, Secretary Karin Simmat, and Newsletter Editor Mary Schappert. Annual membership is $45.00, running from July 1 to June 30.
