Founding & Background

The Nederlandse Coniferen Vereniging (NCV) is a legal society registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) under number 28115875. It was founded in the late 1990s at the initiative of Aad Vergeer, a long-time Boskoop conifer specialist. The association aims to promote the role of conifers as structural and seasonal colour elements in gardens, and to give hobbyists and professionals a long-term meeting ground for this relatively small plant group. Its secretariat has long been based in Sprundel (municipality of Rucphen, North Brabant), and the association operates its public website at coniferenvereniging.com.

Organisation & Member Services

Day-to-day running rests on a seven-person volunteer board covering chair, vice-chair, secretary, treasurer, journal editor and membership administration. The chair is Thea Geers; the vice-chair is Henk van Kempen, who also manages the website; the secretary and membership officer is Peter Schrauwen; the treasurer and ConiSferen editor-in-chief is Jos van Bergen. The annual membership fee is 40 euros, and members receive four issues of ConiSferen each year plus access to the annual programme of visits.

ConiSferen & Publications

ConiSferen is the association’s quarterly journal. It carries travel reports, conifer cultivar descriptions, association news and stories about rare conifers. In 2005 the NCV published Promising Conifers Part 1, a 169-page volume collecting recently introduced conifer cultivars that complemented the well-known Conifers by D. M. van Gelderen and van Hoey Smith. Back issues of ConiSferen are available digitally via the bladnl platform.

Annual Events & International Tours

Each year the NCV runs four field visits: three within the Netherlands and one international trip jointly organised with the British Conifer Society. In May 2018 the association opened a show garden inside the Sortimentstuin “Harry van de Laar” in Boskoop, where members’ rare conifer cultivars are grown out for visitors during the Sortimentstuin’s normal opening hours.

Industry Influence & Partnerships

The NCV works closely with the British Conifer Society on international trips and with the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC) within the Boskoop horticultural cluster. The membership sits at around 120 hobbyists and growers, and has been stable for years. Vice-chair Henk van Kempen has received a recognised international award for his work on the conservation and introduction of rare Tsuga and Pseudotsuga cultivars in the conifer horticulture field.
