Company History and Family Succession
Vitax Limited is a fourth-generation, family-owned British horticultural supplies business whose origins can be traced back to G H Richards Limited, a small horticultural sundries firm established in 1880 in Bermondsey, South London. Frank Henry Gooding, a chemist, joined Synchemicals Limited in 1941; after the Second World War the company acquired G H Richards in 1947 and adopted the Borough High Street address in Bermondsey as its headquarters. In 1988 the business relocated from London to purpose-built premises in Coalville, Leicestershire, and in the same year acquired the original Vitax Limited brand, deciding to unify all products under the Vitax name. In 2023 Anja Gooding became Chairman, taking the family business into its fourth generation.
Three Business Lines
The company currently operates three branded divisions. Vitax Garden (with the Garden World storefront) serves home gardeners, offering specialist fertilisers, lawn products, weedkillers and pest control solutions. Vitax Amenity supplies professional groundskeepers and greenkeepers who maintain sportsturf at golf courses, football, cricket and rugby pitches, racecourses and televised international venues, and also provides line-marking paints and machines. Vitax Grower distributes organic and inorganic fertilisers plus water-management products through specialist horticultural distributors, serving nurseries, ornamentals, fruit, vegetable and salad growers.
Manufacturing and Certification
Two UK manufacturing sites form the backbone of operations: the Coalville, Leicestershire headquarters plant and the second site at Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Both facilities have achieved full international Quality Management Systems and Environmental Management Systems certification; in-house research, development and quality-control staff test and monitor production against strict specifications. The factories also handle new-product formulation, making the company one of the few UK-owned producers that retains end-to-end control over its fertiliser and plant-care range.
Customer Base and Service
Vitax serves three customer groups: weekend gardeners, professional groundskeepers (greenkeepers and groundspeople) and professional growers. The retail range is sold through the Garden World online store and independent garden centres; the amenity range is supplied directly to sports venues and contractors; the grower range is sold via specialist horticultural distributors in pack sizes suitable for trade customers. The company also partners with the National Forest on staff tree-planting days, embedding sustainability into everyday operations.
Royal Warrant and Gardening Books
Vitax holds a Royal Warrant from the British monarch, currently granted by His Majesty King Charles III as “Manufacturers of Fertilisers and Plant Health Products”; the warrant traces back to the original Vitax Limited acquired in 1988 and has been held continuously since. The gardening-book side also has long history: the eponymous Vitax Gardening Book was written in the 1950s by Eric Hutchinson, the firm’s first Managing Director, and proved so popular that it ran to multiple editions, remaining a familiar reference for British gardeners.
