Fraser’s Thimble Farm
Fraser’s Thimble Farm is a three-acre destination nursery located on the northern tip of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, specializing in rare, unusual, and native plants. Established in 1972 by Richard and Nancy Fraser, the farm has grown from a simple plant stand into a woodland specialty farm offering over 10,000 plant varieties, including perennials, trees, shrubs, ferns, and hardy orchids.
Farm History and Philosophy
Founded in 1972 by owner-operators Richard and Nancy Fraser, Fraser’s Thimble Farm has spent over five decades cultivating its reputation as a destination nursery for rare and native plants. Richard, who was born and raised on the same property, brings intimate knowledge of the local land and its water needs. The farm’s core philosophy centers on water conservation and promoting native plants adapted to BC’s climate, offering collectors and gardeners access to unique and hard-to-find specimens from around the world.
Water Conservation Practices
Water conservation has been integral to Fraser’s Thimble Farm since its inception, driven by childhood memories of summer water shortages. Today, the farm is the most water-efficient operation of its kind in British Columbia. Key practices include catchment ponds built in the late 1970s and 1980s collecting rainwater from building rooftops; a 2016 pond expansion adding approximately 50,000 gallons of storage capacity; over 6,000 feet of shade structures protecting plants from harsh summer sun; and strategic watering methods such as waiting for wilt before irrigating and rooting plants directly into the ground to reduce water demand.
Plant Selection and Specialties
Fraser’s Thimble Farm has built a reputation for weird, wonderful, and hard-to-find plants from around the world, catering to collectors, curators, and curious gardeners. Year-round offerings include perennials, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, alongside the farm’s standout specialties: ferns and hardy orchids. Spring brings vegetable starts, annuals, basket stuffers, and roses. The farm also offers hand-crafted concrete creations, pots, and birdbaths at the nursery.
