About the Society

The Nederlandse Rotsplanten Vereniging (NRV), or Dutch Rock Garden Society, traces its origins to 1985, when it was founded as the NRW (Nederlandse Rotsplantenwerkgroep). Today the society has roughly 675 members, mostly amateur enthusiasts together with a number of professional growers.

Membership

Annual dues are €32.50 for members in the Netherlands and €40 for members abroad, with reduced rates for those joining after 1 June. Members who pay by direct debit receive an additional €2.50 discount. Membership includes the twice-yearly magazine Folium Alpinum, the annual seed list with twenty free packets, free entry to all events, and access to the password-protected member area on the society’s website.

Programme and Lectures

Each winter the NRV holds a series of lecture days featuring Dutch and international speakers on alpine plants, botanical travels, cultivation, and rock garden construction. The annual Workshopdag (sometimes still called Doedag) takes place in December and covers sowing, cuttings, trough planting, and rock garden building. The Verenigingsdag in early March combines the annual general meeting with a lecture and informal plant exchange.

Seed Exchange and Plant Sales

An annual seed list is published each November and compiled from contributions by members. Two plant sales are held each year, in spring and autumn, at the Botanische Tuinen Utrecht at Fort Hoofddijk, where both professional nurseries and members can offer surplus plants. The autumn sale leans more toward alpines and unusual species.

Publications and Exchange

Folium Alpinum is the society’s main journal, complemented by the Plant van de Maand feature that has run on the website since 2016. To mark the 25th anniversary in 2010 the society published the Handboek voor de Rotstuin, still available through the NRV. The society shares an online forum with the Vlaamse Rotsplanten Vereniging and maintains links with the Scottish, North American, and Alpine Garden Societies as well as the Prague Rock Garden Club.
