Tranquil Lake Nursery is a perennial plant farm and ornamental nursery located in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Spanning roughly 22 stone-free pastoral acres along the Palmer River, the farm has grown daylilies, Siberian iris, and Japanese iris since 1970, and has combined field-grown propagation, container production, display gardens, and landscape design as a single integrated horticultural business for nearly five decades.

History and Land Preservation

The nursery was founded in 1970 by Charles Trommer, an avid plant collector and dye chemist, together with his wife Edy, a Rehoboth school teacher, on land that had already been farmed for generations, as the iconic stone farm walls still bear witness. In 1986 horticulturists Warren Leach and Philip Boucher purchased the nursery and over the next twenty-eight years expanded it into field-grown daylilies and iris, container perennials, and a thriving landscape design practice. In 2012 the partners, together with the Rehoboth Land Trust, The Trustees of Reservations, and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, placed the entire farm under a permanent Agricultural Preservation Restriction, ensuring the land will never be developed and must remain in agriculture forever; Warren Leach and horticulturist Debi Hogan subsequently became the sole owners.

Plants and Product Range

Eight acres of field-grown daylilies, Siberian iris, and Japanese iris form the backbone of the nursery’s production, complemented by a two-acre display garden that shows how perennials, dwarf conifers, ornamental grasses, water plants, and tender perennials combine in mixed borders and water gardens. A separate container yard supplies cold-hardy perennials, shrubs, and small trees, including the early- and late-blooming daylilies highlighted in the nursery’s catalogue year after year. The nursery stands behind every plant with a clear guarantee: any unsatisfactory plant may be returned promptly with its original label for a full refund, a policy that has supported long-term repeat customers across New England.

Horticultural Events and Education

Peak bloom runs from June through August, when visitors are invited to wander the display gardens, join guided tours, and attend hands-on educational events. The nursery maintains a busy speakers’ bureau, hosts workshops, and offers on-site landscape consultations; founder Warren Leach is a regular contributor to Fine Gardening, Horticulture Magazine, and Timber Press, and his interviews have appeared in outlets such as Gardenista. Newsletters, a video tour, and archived event handouts keep remote gardeners connected to the farm throughout the year.

Landscape Design and Consultations

Designed by horticulturist and garden designer Warren Leach, Tranquil Lake’s landscape work ranges from a rockbound ocean-side property in Manchester-by-the-Sea to a country estate in North Grafton, Massachusetts, and a 4,000-acre gentleman’s farm in Madison, Virginia. Each project begins with a site-sensitive reading of soil, light, architecture, and the client’s lifestyle, and proceeds through consultation, master planning, installation, and long-term stewardship. The nursery welcomes gift-certificate holders and pre-ordered pickups by appointment, and continues to balance field production, retail sales, design services, and public education on the same protected farm.
