荷兰 皇家树木协会 – 专业人士与爱好者的木本植物知识平台与灵感来源

Koninklijke Nederlandse Dendrologische Vereniging 100 jaar

Origins and Royal Designation

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Dendrologische Vereniging (Koninklijke NDV) is an association registered in Wageningen, the Netherlands. It was founded on 10 June 1924 at Hotel de Wereld by landscape architect Leonard Springer together with a group of nurserymen and horticulturists, in response to widespread confusion in the naming of woody plants on Dutch nurseries. Within a year the society had published its first Jaarboek and joined national efforts such as the search for replacement elm cultivars after the spread of Dutch elm disease. Since 1964 the society has co-published the annual Dendroflora with the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC); its quarterly membership magazine was renamed Arbor Vitae in 1991. On 11 June 2024, during the centennial celebration at Hotel de Wereld, commissioner of the King Henri Lenferink presented the Predicaat Koninklijk certificate granted by King Willem-Alexander, after which the society formally took the title Koninklijke. Mayor Floor Vermeulen of Wageningen serves as Beschermheer (patron).

Mission, Governance and Volunteers

The constitution defines the society as a knowledge platform and source of inspiration for both professionals and amateurs interested in houtige gewassen (woody plants of the temperate zone), with goals covering research, conservation of plant collections, standardisation of plant names and knowledge exchange across the horticultural community. Membership is open to any individual or institution with an interest in temperate woody plants. Day-to-day affairs are handled by an unpaid seven-member bestuur (board) chaired by Jos Koppen, with Huib Sneep as vice-chair, Wilma Verburg as secretary, Benno Smit as treasurer, and board members Lammert Krgt and Leena Salminen; one seat is currently vacant. Five standing committees report to the board: Scholing en Opleiding (education), Activiteitencommissie (activities), Websitecommissie (web), Bibliotheekcommissie (library) and Plaquettecommissie (collections). The Algemene Ledenvergadering (annual general meeting) takes place in early March.

Year Programme, Courses and Awards

Each year the society organises roughly twelve member events: the Sortimentsdag (cultivar day), Larensteindag, Dendrologendag, Najaarsbijeenkomst, the Algemene Ledenvergadering and a three-day Zomerbijeenkomst that travels abroad every third year. Education consists of two practical courses (A, “Inleiding tot de dendrologie”, and B, “Praktische dendrologie”) and one theoretical course (C, “Vervolgcursus dendrologie”, paused in 2026), taught at five venues: Arboretum De Nieuwe Ooster in Amsterdam, Arboretum Trompenburg in Rotterdam, Arboretum Oudenbosch, Belmonte Arboretum in Wageningen and the Botanische Tuin Utrecht. Fees in 2026 stand at € 360 for NDV members and € 400 for non-members, with a minimum of twelve participants per group. The Dendrologisch Fonds “Theo Janson” supports Dutch and Belgian projects of educational or idealistic dendrological importance with an annual budget of about € 1 000 and a ceiling of € 5 000. The S.G.A. Doorenbospenning medal, named after co-founder S.G.A. Doorenbos, comes in silver and bronze and rotates roughly every five years.

Publications, Library and Plant-Name Standard

The society’s publications fall into two streams: the annual Dendroflora (Dutch with English abstracts, reporting cultivar trials, variety assessments and naming research) co-produced with KVBC, and the quarterly Arbor Vitae (full-colour membership magazine with event announcements, dendrological articles, book reviews and news). The Arbor Vitae table of contents has been archived online back to 2006. In April 2024 the society published the second edition of the Standaardlijst Nederlandse namen van cultuurplanten, listing about 10 000 preferred Dutch common names for cultivated plants. The members’ library is housed in the entrance building of Arboretum Trompenburg in Rotterdam and can be consulted by appointment (010-2330166). Holdings range from introductory guides such as Johnson & More’s Bomengids van Europa, De Koning & Van den Broek’s Dendrologie van de lage landen and Dirk Slagter’s Ontdek Winterkenmerken, to large reference works including Aljos Farjon’s two-volume Handbook of the World’s Conifers and the Encyclopedia of Conifers.
