History
In 1795, poet Thomas Tickell sold his house and 16 acres of land in Glasnevin. The Irish Parliament acquired it and gave it to the Royal Dublin Society to establish Ireland’s first botanic gardens. The famous double line of yew trees, known as “Addison’s Walk,” can still be seen today. The Gardens are operated by the Irish government through the Office of Public Works, serving as one of Ireland’s premier scientific institutions.
Plant Collections and Research
The Gardens contain over 16,000 plant species and cultivars from around the world, including more than 300 endangered species (6 extinct in the wild). The National Herbarium houses over 600,000 dried plant specimens. An active DNA research laboratory conducts projects on plant identification and classification. A new multi-storey complex built in 2022 includes a cafe and lecture theatre.
Glasshouses and Garden Features
The Gardens are renowned for their exquisitely restored historic glasshouses, including Richard Turner’s Curvilinear Range and the Great Palm House (both award-winning). Features include the rockery, herbaceous borders, rose garden, bog garden, vegetable garden, and arboretum. A partnership with Kilmacurragh in County Wicklow since 1854 is famous for rhododendron collections.
Education and Public Engagement
The Gardens offer horticultural training programs and host workshops throughout the year. Guided tours are available for €5 per person. The Gardens participate in national and international biodiversity conservation initiatives, ranking as Ireland’s seventh most visited attraction and second most visited free attraction.
