Overview
Shenyang Botanical Garden (also known as Shenyang World Expo Garden) is situated in the Panjingshan International Scenic and Tourist Development Zone in the Hunnan District of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, approximately ten kilometers from the city center. Covering an area of 2.46 square kilometers, the garden is among the first batch of national 5A-level tourist attractions in China, serving as a comprehensive tourism destination that integrates green ecology, refined gardens, cultural landscapes, scientific research, education, and leisure entertainment. The 2006 Shenyang International Horticultural Exposition was held at this site, after which the garden was permanently preserved and continues to operate as one of the most influential botanical gardens and tourist destinations in Northeast China.
The garden houses over 2,000 plant species, including outdoor woody plants, herbaceous plants, and greenhouse collections from Northeast China, Northwest China, North China, and Inner Mongolia, making it the most species-rich botanical exhibition garden in the region. The landmark structures—including the Lily Tower, Phoenix Wings, and Rose Garden—complement 100 exhibition gardens featuring landscape architecture from five continents and major cities across China, distributed across the garden’s north and south zones, creating a harmonious blend of human artistry and natural beauty.
History
Shenyang Botanical Garden’s establishment is closely tied to the 2006 Shenyang International Horticultural Exposition, themed “Harmonious Coexistence of Humanity and Nature.” Following the exposition’s conclusion, the site was transformed into a permanent park, retaining all exhibition gardens and supporting facilities. Over years of development, the garden has deepened its commitment to plant conservation, science education, and ecological tourism, earning national 5A-level tourist attraction status around 2010 and becoming a key landmark for Shenyang and Liaoning Province. Recent years have seen ongoing upgrades to infrastructure, including revamps to the children’s playground with nature-based play equipment and the implementation of smart tourism systems to enhance visitor experiences.
Exhibition Gardens
The 100 exhibition gardens represent the core attraction of Shenyang World Expo Garden, divided into domestic and international sections. Domestic gardens showcase fine Chinese garden architecture from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, reflecting the profound heritage of Chinese landscape art. International gardens represent dozens of countries and regions across five continents—from French romance and English naturalistic gardens to Japanese zen aesthetics and Islamic landscapes—allowing visitors to experience global garden cultures within a single destination. Each garden retains its original exposition-era design and plant arrangements, with some adapted to Northeast China’s climate to ensure year-round appeal.
The garden hosts major seasonal flower exhibitions throughout the year, including the Flower Festival, Tulip Show, Lotus Festival, and Chrysanthemum Fair, drawing large numbers of local and out-of-town visitors. During exhibitions, the garden also offers traditional cultural experiences and parent-child horticulture workshops, combining ornamental appeal with educational value.
Landmark Structures
Phoenix Wings (Feng Zhi Yi) stands at the main entrance square as the garden’s iconic gateway. With a building area of 4,168 square meters, the main tower rises 72 meters, with the “phoenix wings” extending 210 meters and supported by ten diagonal steel cables. The architectural form resembles a phoenix spreading its wings, symbolizing Shenyang’s revitalization and soaring development. Below the tower lies a 1,000-square-meter musical fountain, adding dynamic vitality to the expo garden’s landscape.
Lily Tower (Bai He Ta) reaches 125 meters as the garden’s highest point and China’s largest sculptural building. Shaped like a blooming white lily, it symbolizes prosperity and harmonious development for Shenyang. Observation platforms at 95 meters and 100 meters offer panoramic views of the entire expo garden, accessible by elevator.
Rose Garden was built to honor Shenyang’s municipal flower—the rose. Covering 10,000 square meters, it brings together numerous rose varieties from around the world, making it one of the most diverse rose gardens globally. The Rose Garden pioneered the use of ground-source heat pump heating technology in China, enabling it to remain warm and bloom year-round even during Shenyang’s freezing winters—a model of energy-efficient greenhouse horticulture in cold northern regions.
Leisure and Services
Shenyang World Expo Garden offers comprehensive services integrating sightseeing, recreation, dining, and shopping. Sightseeing vehicles provide easy transport across the expansive grounds, while professional guided tours help visitors deeply appreciate each garden’s history, culture, and plant collections. Dining options range from fast food to full-service restaurants and local snacks. The on-site mall offers ticket reservations and cultural products, with online booking available for visitor convenience.
Recreational facilities include boat rides on the artificial lake, scenic bridges designed since the 1990s that have become popular photography spots, a 1,400-square-meter Science Museum with exhibitions on animals, fossils, and insects, and a newly renovated children’s playground featuring nature-based play equipment that has become a favorite among families. The Italian terraced wedding garden, covering eight hectares, is one of the largest wedding venues in Northeast China, offering wedding photography and ceremony services. Additional attractions—such as the forest-themed post office and youth science education programs—further enrich the visitor experience.
