Planticare

Origins and the Three Co-Founders
Mijntuin.org was founded in 2010 by three gardening enthusiasts from Deinze in the Belgian province of East Flanders: Dieter De Weirdt, Lieven Gekiere, and Rik Calus. The site went live that September. The trio noticed that existing Dutch-language gardening sites only let users search for information on demand, with no way to receive plant-specific care reminders based on what was actually growing in their own gardens, so they built their own community around that gap. The name Mijntuin simply means «my garden» in Dutch, and mijntuin.org remained the main entry point throughout the project’s life.
Digital Garden and Personalized Tuinkalender
The core of the platform was a personal digital garden. After signing up, members could add each plant in their yard to an editable plantenlijst, and the system would build a personalized tuinkalender that pushed timely care notes through the site, email, or the mobile app: when to prune, when to fertilize, when to repot, when to sow, and when to harvest. This «reverse push» approach to gardening information was uncommon at the time and helped less experienced gardeners keep up with seasonal tasks without having to track each plant manually.
Community-Edited Plant Wiki and Social Tools
Alongside the personal garden, Mijntuin.org maintained a community-edited plant wiki where every species entry included the Latin name, growing notes, member-uploaded photos, and ongoing discussion threads. Members could follow each other, browse neighbouring gardens on a simple map, filter plants by colour, height, or bloom period, and keep a separate wenslijst for species they wanted to acquire later. Forum threads, private messages, a prikbord noticeboard, and a local activity calendar extended the same social fabric to plant questions, plant swaps, and in-person meet-ups.
Plantifier Photo ID and Planticare Pest Diagnostics
Two photo-based tools were added as the platform grew. Plantifier let users photograph an unknown plant seen on a walk, at a friend’s house, or in a garden centre and upload it to the site; community members then voted on and proposed the species name, which became the standard way to settle «what is this pink-flowered thing?» questions. Planticare focused on plant health: members uploaded pictures of affected leaves or stems and received likely causes and treatment suggestions drawn from the platform’s knowledge base and replies from other gardeners. Both tools were also released as iPhone and iPad apps and became some of the more popular Dutch-language gardening utilities of their era.
Ownership Changes and the 2024 Service Closure
In 2015 the operating company Mijntuin.org bvba acquired groen.net, another Dutch-language gardening community. Around 2018 the platform as a whole was acquired by Aveve, the gardening chain of the Belgian Boerenbond, as part of the same deal that brought the Eurotuin garden centre chain under the Aveve umbrella; both ended up inside the wider Arvesta group. On 20 March 2023 founder Lieven Gekiere publicly said goodbye to the project on LinkedIn, noting that the community and marketplace had already been run by Aveve and Arvesta for five years. On 31 May 2024 the Mijntuin.org website, mobile apps, and Plantifier and Planticare services were officially discontinued, and the domain now redirects to the Belgian Eurotuin site.
