About the Association
Vlaamse Rotsplanten Vereniging (VRV) is a Belgian society for enthusiasts of rock garden plants, alpines, dwarf shrubs, and related container-grown ornamentals, based in the Flemish Region. The association brings together hobbyists across Flanders and neighbouring provinces for plant cultivation, field study, seed exchange, and member garden visits.
Aims of the Society
The association gathers rock plant growers scattered across Flanders and surrounding provinces, encourages the exchange of cultivation experience, and promotes rock gardening as a horticultural form well suited to small plots. It also supports the conservation of rare mountain flora and encourages members to record long-term performance of rock plants in garden cultivation.
Journal and Publications
The association publishes a quarterly journal covering society news, cultivation features, reports from overseas rock gardens, and cultivation notes contributed by members. Special electronic compilations are prepared for each themed issue and made available to members after login. A 2014 anniversary issue remains freely readable on the website.
Specialist Plant Pages and Forum
The website maintains long-running themed pages on Oncocyclus irises, Trilliums, and peonies, with cultivation notes and habitat information. A member forum supports discussion of cultivation questions, plant exchange, and field trips. Several long-running private rock gardens are open to members for visits and are documented through photography on the site.
International Links
VRV maintains contact with sister societies including the Nederlandse Rotsplanten Vereniging (NRV), the Scottish Rock Garden Club (SRGC), and the Vlaamse Vaste Planten Vereniging (VVPV), and members frequently organise joint activities with these groups. Regular member meetings are hosted at the Ghent University Botanic Garden, and the association works closely with several specialist alpine nurseries.
