The American Boxwood Society (ABS) is a not-for-profit membership organisation founded in 1961 and devoted to the appreciation, scientific understanding and propagation of the genus Buxus L. It was organised by a group of amateur and professional boxwood enthusiasts and is headquartered at the Orland E. White Arboretum (the State Arboretum of Virginia) at Blandy Experimental Farm, east of Winchester, VA.

ABS serves as the International Registration Authority for cultivated Buxus L. and publishes The Boxwood Bulletin quarterly journal. The Society’s flagship reference works, Boxwood: An Illustrated Encyclopedia (second edition, 668 pages) and the Boxwood Handbook (third edition, 123 pages), are both authored by Lynn R. Batdorf, the International Cultivar Registration Authority registrar since 1985.

Publication System and International Cultivar Registration

The Society maintains the international cultivar registration database for Buxus L., currently listing approximately 217 registered cultivars and 148 commercially available varieties. The Boxwood Bulletin has been published continuously since 1961 across 63 volumes, covering cultivar evaluation, pest and disease management, historic garden documentation, and propagation techniques. Members receive full digital access to the historical archive.

Affiliated Gardens and Research Network

ABS partners with the US National Arboretum in Washington DC, which curates the National Boxwood Collection; Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; and the Blandy Experimental Farm / State Arboretum of Virginia, where the ABS Memorial Garden displays more than 100 boxwood species and cultivars. Research collaborators include Cornell University’s Long Island Horticulture Research & Education Center, Virginia Tech’s Department of Plant Pathology & Weed Science, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, USDA-APHIS, and multiple state Cooperative Extension services.

Membership Tiers and Annual Symposia

ABS offers six membership categories (Individual, Family, Corporate/Business, Student, and Public Facility with separate US and international rates). The Annual Symposium rotates among affiliated garden locations and features lectures, hands-on workshops, and curated garden tours. Recent symposia have been hosted at Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia; Pottersville, New Jersey; and Charlotte, North Carolina. The 2025 Symposium ‘Roots and Shoots’ at Blandy featured keynote lectures on boxwood design language, blight resistance, propagation techniques, and soil science. The 2026 edition is planned for Louisville, Kentucky, with 2027 moving to Washington DC.
