From a Horticulture Group to a College
The college traces its origins to two sources. In 1936 the private Fukien Christian University opened an agriculture division and set up a horticulture group inside its agronomy department; in 1940 Fukien Provincial Agricultural College was founded with a horticulture department of its own. The two were brought together in the 1952 reorganisation of departments that formed Fujian Agricultural College, where the horticulture department took its name, and the department was restored in 1972. The college itself was formally established in 1996 and has run ever since, making it one of the oldest teaching units on campus. Over ninety years it has built its research around subtropical horticultural crops in Fujian and Taiwan and has served five Fujian industries each worth a hundred billion yuan: fruit, tea, vegetables, flowers and edible fungi. Its graduates include academicians, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, chief experts of national industry programmes and national role models.
Disciplines, Degrees and Undergraduate Teaching
The college runs a postdoctoral station in horticulture, doctoral and master’s programmes in horticulture as a first-level discipline, and a professional doctorate in agriculture, together with a professional master’s programme in agronomy and the seed industry with a horticulture track. The first-level discipline is divided into five second-level fields: pomology, tea science, olericulture, ornamental horticulture and smart horticulture. Horticulture is a highland discipline and a key distinctive discipline of Fujian Province, while pomology and tea science are key disciplines built with provincial government support. Three undergraduate majors are offered: horticulture, tea science and smart agriculture. Horticulture and tea science are national first-class undergraduate programme sites, and smart agriculture is part of the national 101 Plan. In teaching, the college has built four national first-class undergraduate courses and ten provincial ones, edited five national-level planned textbooks, and won two second prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award along with three special prizes and one first prize in Fujian.
Faculty
The college has 104 staff, 69 of them full-time teachers; 48 hold senior titles and more than 98 percent of the teaching staff hold doctoral degrees. There are 32 doctoral supervisors and 79 master’s supervisors, the latter including off-campus supervisors. Among the faculty are one jointly appointed academician, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, one recipient of a Category B National Young Scientists Fund grant, and one chief expert each for the national pak choi breeding programme, the national citrus industry technology system, the national tea industry technology system and the executive group of the national banana industry system. Two teachers belong to the Ministry of Education’s first group of backbone university teachers, one holds a Fok Ying Tung young teachers’ fund award, one is a Minjiang education leading young scholar, and 29 are provincial high-level talents. Staff hold 68 posts in major domestic academic bodies and 38 editorial or review posts with journals at home and abroad.
Research Platforms and Output
The college co-builds the Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Breeding and Comprehensive Utilisation under the Ministry of Education and the Key Laboratory for the Conservation and Use of Orchid Plants under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. It also runs the Cross-Strait Flower Industry Science and Technology Innovation Highland, the Fujian Subtropical Fruit and Special Economic Crop Germplasm Resource Sharing Platform, the Fujian Tea Industry Engineering Technology Research Centre, the Fujian-Taiwan Fruit Germplasm Test-tube Seedling Bank, the Fujian university key laboratory for tea science and the national education and inheritance base for fine traditional Chinese tea culture, and it hosts a research centre for horticultural plant biology and metabolomics. In recent years staff have taken on one project of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one Category B National Young Scientists Fund project, 20 general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, nine sub-topics of national key research and development programmes and science and technology schemes, and more than a hundred further projects funded through the national modern agricultural industry system, the national pak choi breeding programme and provincial major schemes. The college has published 27 papers in journals including Science, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, PNAS, The Plant Cell and Plant Physiology, and has won one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one Shennong China Agricultural Science and Technology Award, seven first prizes and ten second prizes of the Fujian science and technology progress awards, and two first prizes of the provincial standard contribution award.
Extension Work and Cross-Strait Cooperation
The college puts its disciplines and people to work in industry, serving the five Fujian industries of fruit, tea, flowers, vegetables and edible fungi, each worth a hundred billion yuan. It hosts 19 science and technology backyards, 12 university-level rural revitalisation service teams and seven seed industry innovation teams, has 48 provincial science and technology commissioners, has built 235 demonstration bases, transferred 128 research results, and led the drafting of 36 standards: two international, 12 national, three industry, 14 local and five association standards. Work with Taiwan is a long-standing commitment. The college runs three correspondence programmes, covering horticultural technology at diploma level for Taiwanese students, horticulture upgrade courses for grassroots agricultural technicians, and horticultural technology for new professional farmers, and it has trained 446 horticultural industry professionals from Taiwan while serving 14 national Taiwan farmers’ entrepreneurship parks that specialise in horticulture. It has also held two conferences of the Belt and Road Tea Industry Science and Technology Innovation Alliance and one cross-strait conference on the integrated development of horticultural science, technology and the economy, with graduate students giving more than 20 reports at major academic meetings at home and abroad.
