From Horticulture Department to a College
The College of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Southwest University began as the Horticulture Department of Southwest Agricultural College in 1950, one of the first and most established teaching units on campus. The department was renamed in 1985 when the institution became Southwest Agricultural University, and in 2002 it was reorganised as the College of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture of that university. In July 2005 Southwest Agricultural University merged with Southwest Normal University to form Southwest University, and the college took its present name. Undergraduate teaching in horticulture goes back to a fruit and vegetable programme set up in 1950, which was later split into separate fruit and vegetable tracks and combined into a single horticulture major in 1995. Undergraduate teaching in landscape architecture started in 1984. The college is in Beibei District, Chongqing, and its teaching and research are carried out on the Southwest University campus.
Three Departments and the Degree System
The college has three departments, for horticulture, landscape architecture and plant science, and offers three undergraduate majors: horticulture, landscape gardening and landscape architecture. Horticulture was among the first national first-class majors and is also a national speciality major, landscape gardening is a national first-class major, and landscape architecture is a Chongqing first-class major. On the degree side, the college has a postdoctoral station and a doctoral programme in horticulture as a first-level discipline, a professional doctorate in landscape architecture, three second-level doctoral programmes in pomology, olericulture and ornamental horticulture, six second-level master’s programmes in pomology, olericulture, ornamental horticulture, botany, cell biology and microbiology, and two professional master’s programmes in landscape architecture and agriculture. Pomology is a national key discipline under cultivation, and pomology, olericulture and landscape plants and ornamental horticulture are key disciplines of Chongqing. Horticulture trains graduate students in four steady directions: exploration and use of germplasm resources, development and application of breeding techniques, efficient cultivation and green production, and regulation of product quality and nutrition. Landscape architecture has been taught here for more than forty years, is a key discipline in Chongqing’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and is organised into five teaching and research sections covering planning and design with history and theory, plant application and ecology, architecture and engineering, plant propagation, and design fundamentals.
Faculty and Research Platforms
The college has 117 staff, including 26 professors and research fellows, 36 associate professors and associate research fellows, one expert receiving a special government allowance from the State Council, and three academic and technical leaders of Chongqing. About 1,700 undergraduates, master’s students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are enrolled. The horticulture department has 38 staff, among them 10 professors, 19 associate professors, four doctoral supervisors and 23 master’s supervisors. The landscape architecture department has 54 staff; 92.5 percent hold master’s or doctoral degrees, more than half have studied or worked abroad, and 11 are full professors. Research platforms include the Key Laboratory of Southern Mountain Horticulture under the Ministry of Education, the Konjac Research Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chongqing Flower Engineering Technology Research Centre, the Chongqing Loquat Engineering Technology Research Centre, the Chongqing Agricultural Comprehensive Development and Technology Extension Centre, the Chongqing university key laboratories for olericulture and for pomology, the Chongqing university engineering research centre for konjac resource use, and the Southwest University Landscape Planning and Design Institute, together more than ten ministerial, provincial and university-level platforms. Eight research teams work on cruciferous vegetable genetics and breeding, konjac resource evaluation and efficient cultivation, fruit quality biology, horticultural plant quality regulation and biological breeding, national landscape protection and ecological restoration, landscape planning and design, landscape plants and their use, and sustainable human settlements and engineering technology. There are two teaching and research farms on campus and more than twenty off-campus practice bases, including a national demonstration joint training base for professional master’s degrees in landscape architecture; the landscape architecture department also runs 22 laboratories.
Research Output and International Cooperation
Over the past decade the college has taken on more than 1,080 projects under the 863 Programme, the 973 Programme, the National Natural Science Foundation and provincial and commissioned schemes, with total funding of nearly 182 million yuan. It has published 711 academic papers and 19 books, textbooks and popular science titles; won seven national and provincial-level research awards including a second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award; bred 23 new varieties; obtained six plant variety rights and 28 invention patents; and taken more than thirty provincial-level or higher awards for planning and design work. During the 14th Five-Year Plan the horticulture discipline added more than 30 national-level projects, published in journals such as Nature Communications, Microbiome, Plant Journal and Plant Physiology, added one national first-class undergraduate course and six provincial-level first-class courses, published five textbooks and two books and drew up one standard. Its “Xiyuan No. 4” cabbage was listed among the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recommended varieties for two years running, one technology was listed among Chongqing’s recommended technologies, and the college led work that won a first prize of the Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Award. Internationally, the college works with universities and research institutes in more than twenty countries and regions, including the United States, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden and France. It runs a 2+2 undergraduate programme with Colorado State University and a 3+1 programme with Nottingham Trent University, and the landscape architecture discipline also trains students from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Pakistan.
College Motto and Extension Work
The college motto is “follow nature, serve the public”, meaning that the college follows natural laws and serves the country and society. Its stated spirit is thought first, practice above all, broad learning and constant refinement, and the university as a whole speaks of standing tall in the southwest and learning for the world. On the service side the college runs a science outreach centre and a training centre and carries out technology extension through the Chongqing Agricultural Comprehensive Development and Technology Extension Centre. Staff and student teams work on urban and rural development in the southwest, on the ecological barrier of the upper Yangtze, and on the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, and have produced practical technical solutions for rural revitalisation, national landscape protection, watershed ecological treatment and forest restoration; teachers also advise production at national science and technology backyards. Among its graduates, a group led by the academician Wu Mingzhu has worked for decades on the front line of fruit, vegetable and landscape gardening.
