Society Overview and History

The Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) was founded in 1956 and is headquartered in Westminster, Colorado. It is one of the oldest non-profit professional organizations in North America dedicated to weed science research, education, and extension. WSSA was established by university weed scientists, agricultural extension specialists, and herbicide technology experts, and for nearly seven decades it has served as the leading cross-disciplinary academic society in the North American weed science community. The organizing meeting was held in Chicago, Illinois in 1956, and W. C. Robocker of Washington State University served as the first president.

Three Peer-Reviewed Journals and Cambridge University Press Partnership

WSSA publishes three peer-reviewed journals that form the core academic literature in the field: Weed Science (formerly Weeds, ISSN 0043-1745), Weed Technology (ISSN 0890-037X), and Invasive Plant Science and Management (ISSN 1939-747X), covering herbicide resistance mechanisms, invasive plant ecology, and integrated weed management respectively. Since 2017 WSSA has partnered with Cambridge University Press to host all three journals on CUP’s online platform, providing DOI registration, global indexing, and online submission. Author guidelines and reviewer instructions are available on the official website’s publications page.

International Herbicide-Resistance Survey and Mode-of-Action Classification

Since 2000 WSSA has maintained the International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds, a global database led by consultant Ian Heap documenting confirmed resistance cases by species, country, year of first confirmation, and mechanism of action. WSSA also publishes the Herbicide Classification by Mode of Action system, which groups all commercial herbicides into 25 mechanism groups (such as EPSPS inhibitors, ALS inhibitors, and ACCase inhibitors) to support integrated weed management (IWM) and label rotation practices among growers, extension agents, and pesticide applicators.

Awards, Research Grants, and Annual Meeting

WSSA recognizes contributions to the discipline through the Fellow Award, Outstanding Graduate Student Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, Early Career Scientist Award, and the annual Photo Contest. Beginning in 2018 the joint annual meeting has been held in cooperation with regional affiliated societies including the Canadian Weed Science Society (CWSS-SCM), North Central Weed Science Society (NCWSS), Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS), Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS), and Western Society of Weed Science (WSWS). The Travel Enrichment Experience (TEE) funds graduate student exchanges, and the Innovative Grants Program awards seed money for exploratory research.

Public Education and Weed Resource Center

The WSSA website operates a public weed resource center for growers, extension staff, journalists, and home gardeners, covering weed identification, garden weed guides, poisonous plants, monarch milkweed and pollinator relations, invasive plant overviews, herbicide safety, crop loss statistics, weed control myths, and an extension weed scientist directory. WSSA maintains long-term partnerships with CropLife America, USDA, EPA, Cambridge University Press, and various state IPM centers, releasing science-based press releases on weed management and resistance from its Westminster headquarters. Press releases are issued throughout the year for agricultural and horticultural media use.
