Ideas Genie is a Windows-based garden plant database developed since 2001 by George Kelly, a Northern Ireland-based gardening writer and business software author, sold under the ideasforgardens.com brand for amateur gardeners, plant collectors, nurseries, garden centres, landscapers and bonsai or hybridizing enthusiasts.

Version History and Platform Support

The current commercial release is Ideas Genie Pro 6, the result of more than 20 years of continuous development. The program runs on Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista and earlier releases such as Windows NT, 2000, Me and 98, with network installations available on request.

Master Database and Garden Plant Records

The accompanying Master Database ships free with every new order (CD option only) and lists over 36,000 plants together with more than 2,100 photos on DVD or Flash Drive. Plant records cover botanical and common names, plant divisions, configurable cultivation topics, pests and diseases, hybrid symbols, Grex names, trade designations and PBR (Plant Breeder Rights) entries, indexed in alignment with the RHS Plant Finder.

Add-On Modules and Photo Workflows

On top of the Master Database, Ideas Genie Pro 6 adds a Lassoing tool for marking plants in garden photos, a Plant Labelling Module that can print text and photos on labels, a Web Page Generator with free hosted space for user sites, a Slideshow module for home enjoyment and public talks, and a Query tool that exports to dbf for use in Excel and other programs.

Customers can begin with a six-month unrestricted evaluation licence for a small payment, then upgrade to a permanent licence.
