Centennial Heritage: From Sanjiang Normal School Agriculture Hall to NAU

Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) is a Ministry-of-Education national key university located in the historic capital Nanjing, distinguished for agriculture and life sciences while spanning agriculture, science, economics, management, engineering, humanities and law. The university traces its lineage to the Agriculture Hall of Sanjiang Normal School in 1902 and the Agriculture Department of Private University of Nanking (Jinling University) in 1914. In 1952 the national reorganization merged the Agriculture College of Jinling University, the Agriculture College of Nanjing University (formerly the National Central University Agriculture College) and selected departments of Zhejiang University Agriculture College to form Nanjing Agricultural College. In 1963 it became one of two nationally key agriculture universities; in 1984 it was renamed Nanjing Agricultural University; in 2000 it was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Education. For more than a century NAU has upheld the motto Cheng Pu Qin Ren and educated over 300,000 alumni including 66 academicians.

Discipline Matrix and College of Horticulture: 4 A-plus subjects and 7 ESI top-1% fields

NAU holds 4 first-level national key disciplines (Crop Science, Agricultural Resources and Environment, Plant Protection, Veterinary Medicine), 3 second-level national key disciplines (Vegetable Science, Agricultural Economics and Management, Land Resource Management) and 1 national key cultivation discipline (Food Science). In the fourth round of national discipline evaluations, 4 disciplines (Crop Science, Agricultural Resources and Environment, Plant Protection, Agricultural and Forestry Economic Management) were ranked A-plus, and 3 (Public Management, Food Science and Engineering, Horticulture) were ranked A. Seven fields — Agricultural Sciences, Plant and Animal Sciences, Environmental Ecology, Biology and Biochemistry, Engineering, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics — rank in the ESI global top 1%; Agricultural Sciences and Plant and Animal Sciences have entered the top 0.1 percent, placing NAU among world-leading disciplines. The College of Horticulture anchors the Plant Science Cluster and provides core support for the A-ranked Horticulture discipline.

Scale and Talent Cultivation: 76 undergraduate programs, 2,900 staff, 19,000 undergraduates

NAU has 20 colleges and departments covering Agriculture, Engineering, Plant Protection, Horticulture, Animal Science and Technology (including the Wuxi Fisheries College), Veterinary Medicine, Resources and Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Economics and Management, Public Administration, Information Management, Foreign Languages, Finance, Grassland Science, Marxism, and the Smart Agriculture (Artificial Intelligence) College. The university offers 76 undergraduate programs, 30 first-level master’s disciplines, 17 first-level doctoral disciplines and 17 postdoctoral mobile stations. It enrolls more than 19,000 full-time undergraduates and 13,500 graduate students, supported by 2,900 faculty and staff including 4 Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians, 72 national distinguished experts and Outstanding Youth Science Fund winners, and 4 nationally recognized teaching masters. Thirty-four programs have been approved as national-level first-class undergraduate program construction sites and 13 as provincial-level first-class sites.

Academic Journals and International Reach: Horticulture Research and Plant Phenomics flagships

NAU hosts or co-publishes more than 60 national and ministry-level research platforms and produces a distinguished portfolio of academic journals spanning social and natural sciences. Flagship natural-science journals include the Journal of Nanjing Agricultural University (Natural Science), Horticulture Research, Plant Phenomics, BioDesign Research, and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. Both Horticulture Research and Plant Phenomics are indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and recognized internationally as leading venues in horticulture and phenomics research. The university maintains the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetics and Germplasm Enhancement, the National Engineering Research Center for Meat Quality and Safety Control, the National Information Agriculture Engineering Technology Center and the National Soybean Improvement Center, making NAU both the home of the National Soybean Improvement Center and the institutional anchor of the Horticulture Research international flagship.

Emblem and NAU Spirit: Concentric Rings, NAU Monogram, 1902, Motto Cheng Pu Qin Ren

The NAU emblem uses concentric rings symbolizing the university’s forward momentum. The Chinese name Nanjing Nongye Daxue in handwritten style (by the calligrapher Fei Xinwo) sits on the upper half of the outer ring; the English name Nanjing Agricultural University sits on the lower half. The monogram NAU is shaped into the silhouette of the Main Building — the university’s signature architecture — with the founding year 1902 beneath, embraced by two crossed mature wheat sheaves representing the lineage from the National Central University Agriculture College and the Jinling University Agriculture College. The motto Cheng Pu Qin Ren draws two characters from each of the predecessor institutions’ own mottos: Cheng Pu Xiong Wei of Central University and Cheng Zhen Qin Ren of Jinling University. The motto and emblem were finalized in January 2009 by the 4th Faculty and Staff Congress.
