The Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden, a non-profit organization, is a remarkable resource for everyone. Located in Old Palo Alto, our historic property has a rich legacy, a commitment to education, and year-round beauty. Come see Gamble for yourself—it is free and the garden is open to the public every day during daylight hours.
History
In 1902, Edwin Percy Gamble and his wife Elizabeth moved from Kentucky to Palo Alto. Their daughter Elizabeth Frances Gamble was thirteen at the time. She spent the remainder of her life in the Gamble house on Waverley Street, and her gardens became known throughout the community. In 1981, at age ninety-two, Elizabeth Frances Gamble left her house and garden to the City of Palo Alto. For four years the City Council deliberated over the property’s future. The Garden Club of Palo Alto led a community campaign to restore and maintain the garden. In 1985 Gamble Garden became a public garden supported by its newly formed non-profit horticultural foundation. Over 300 volunteers provide 35,000+ hours of work annually.
Garden Features
Gamble Garden’s historic two-and-a-half acre property includes a rose garden, cutting garden, formal herb garden, demonstration bed, wisteria garden, and an allée. Miss Gamble’s favorite flower was the Iris. In 1994, hybridizer Lois O’Brien created the Iris ‘Elizabeth Gamble’ in her honor. Historic buildings include the Main House (built 1902), the Tea House (added 1948), the gazebo, tool house, and horticulture office.
