Lierop en Zn.、J.A. Borst Bloembollen、Kapiteyn Speciale culturen、Nord Lommerse Flowerbulb Group、Jac. Uittenbogaard en Zn.、Van der Avoird Lemmer、Maatschap Slootman Claassen、Oijevaar Bloembollen、Burger Lelies en Tulpen、CAN de Jong、Dirkmaat Creil、Stengs en Leijten、Schutte Handel、Ebbers Creil、Maatschap Balk Bloembollen 和 Bom Bloembollen。

Hobaho by Dümmen Orange

A breeding collaboration built by growers

Remarkable Tulips is a collaboration of tulip growing companies, founded in 1996, working on the breeding, growing, exploitation and marketing of new tulip varieties. It describes its own purpose in a single sentence: the goal of Remarkable Tulips is to obtain new exclusive tulip varieties with clear added value, on the basis of cooperation, innovation and technology.

It is not a breeding company but a structure that connects breeders to growers: the participants are a group of well-known companies each specialised in growing, forcing and marketing tulips, sharing a breeding platform and then taking the varieties it produces back to grow and to market. The old article described this rather vaguely — that it was a form of cooperation in which a group of well-known companies specialised in growing, processing and marketing tulips took part — which was right about the meaning but said nothing about how the structure actually works.

Among the varieties produced from Remarkable’s own breeding stable, Denmark®, Choice®, Red Label® and Triple A® are the best known. The catalogue on the site lists 96 varieties carrying the registered trademark sign, and it can be filtered on two axes: type, covering double late, Kaufmanniana, garden tulips, double early, fringed, Darwin hybrids and more; and colour, ranging from yellow, white, purple and orange through pale pink, red, cream and near-black.

The site publishes the full street address, postal code, office telephone and email address. None of that is reproduced here; the organisation’s site is the place to reach them.

The breeding platform: the Hobaho Testcentrum voor Siergewassen

Remarkable’s exclusive breeder is the Hobaho Testcentrum voor Siergewassen in Lisse. The site describes it as having more than thirty years of experience in breeding bulb crops including tulips; Hobaho’s own account is more precise: the Testcentrum has worked on breeding and trialling new ornamental varieties since 1988, and this test centre is Remarkable’s exclusive breeder.

Remarkable’s breeding stock is assembled like this: Remarkable’s own breeding material combined with that of the well-known Noordwijk company Konijnenburg en Mark. Hobaho’s breeding page spells it out — tulip breeding is done in cooperation with the growers’ association Remarkable, hyacinth breeding with the association Markglory, and it additionally runs its own breeding programmes for other bulb crops.

The selection criteria are listed on the site: forcing behaviour, vigour, disease resistance, bud colour and leaf position. Hobaho’s own test centre page is more granular: ornamental value comes first, with uniformity, vase life and important growing and forcing characteristics only looked at in later stages. All varieties are tested closely during the breeding process for disease resistance, keeping quality and flowering, so that adjustments can be made quickly where needed.

The facilities of the test centre are named too: a greenhouse complex of 25 compartments, cold storage cells for bulb treatment, a de-flowering space, insect-screen and film greenhouses, and open-field cultivation for raising young plants. In working on new varieties Hobaho uses newer techniques such as predictive genetics, bio-assays and rapid propagation via tissue culture — investments made in cooperation with Dümmen Orange.

A reorganisation in 2024: from six companies to sixteen

Remarkable Tulips changed scale noticeably in 2024. Until then Remarkable was a collaboration of six well-known companies; in 2024 it entered a partnership with Cooperative Kwekersvereniging NOP of the Noordoostpolder, a federation of ten companies. After that, varieties bred by Remarkable are grown exclusively by 16 companies.

The method is specific: for each tulip variety selected for release, a combination is formed among these 16 companies, taking on production and marketing for that variety. The announcement stresses that the basis for a successful introduction and exploitation of these varieties is forming fixed lines with buyers.

Coordination and sales are handled exclusively by Hobaho bv in Lisse, with its broker Marco Meijer appointed coordinator. The list of participating companies includes W. v. Lierop en Zn., J.A. Borst Bloembollen, Kapiteyn Speciale culturen, Nord Lommerse Flowerbulb Group, Jac. Uittenbogaard en Zn., Van der Avoird Lemmer, Maatschap Slootman Claassen, Oijevaar Bloembollen, Burger Lelies en Tulpen, CAN de Jong, Dirkmaat Creil, Stengs en Leijten, Schutte Handel, Ebbers Creil, Maatschap Balk Bloembollen and Bom Bloembollen.

The context for this expansion is a renewed cooperation agreement signed in February 2024. Hobaho’s announcement says that in recent years the two parties have taken big steps towards getting new varieties onto the market faster, and that those steps — and the ones they hope to take together in coming years — called for a different kind of cooperation agreement, which was signed. The announcement also notes that propagation material from some varieties bred by Remarkable is now offered outside the Remarkable group.

A dark blue banner: open deep blue space fills the left side, while the right carries a cluster of deep purple and burgundy tulips whose blooms are cropped by the top, right and bottom edges, with a dark green stem extending downwards. The overall tone is deep and muted. No people, no text, no watermark

The current members page lists 17 companies, which matches the 16 production partners plus Hobaho itself.

After the breeder changed owners

One more thing is worth noting: Remarkable’s exclusive breeder changed shareholders in 2024. Hobaho had belonged to the Dutch floral breeding group Dümmen Orange since 2016; from 1 July 2024 the shares of Hobaho Horti Group B.V. — comprising Hobaho B.V., the Testcentrum voor Siergewassen and Boeket Handelmaatschappij — were transferred to the incumbent management team, with General Director Theo Aanhane, Manager Finance Hans Molenaar and Manager Supply Chain Arno Verkley, and the MBO investment fund MGF involved as a minority shareholder in the background. Hobaho had 58 permanent staff at the time.

Dümmen Orange’s stated reason was that it wanted to focus on breeding and propagation of cut flowers, pot plants and bedding plants and on North American distribution, while the bulb segment Hobaho works in sits somewhat apart from its core business, so it sold. Hobaho’s side stressed continuity and reliability: all the work put into breeding is only starting to bear fruit, and it would be a shame not to be able to continue on that path.

At the same time the two parties agreed that Hobaho would retain access to Dümmen Orange’s knowledge and capacity. For Remarkable the change meant a new owner for its breeding platform; the test centre itself continues breeding tulips, lilies, hyacinths and gladiolus, and Remarkable’s relationship with it as exclusive breeder is unchanged.

Two varieties named after people

Two events in Remarkable’s catalogue are worth remembering, and both took place in public.

One is Future 400. On 8 April 2024 the Dutch Consul General, Ahmed Dadou, and the commissioner of New York, Rodriguez-Rosa, jointly named and unveiled this tulip at the first Tulip Day on Union Square in New York City. Future 400 is a deep orange variety dedicated to the first Dutch colonists who arrived on Governor’s Island 400 years ago, which the official account calls a symbol of durable friendship and alliance between the United States and the Netherlands, with the aim of renewing that bond for another 400 years. The tulip was developed by Hobaho by Dümmen Orange and will be exploited by Remarkable Tulips; it stands out for its unique dark orange colour, is particularly robust and therefore an excellent choice for cut tulip production, and it flowers already in December.

The other is Jill Biden®. On 6 April 2023 the First Lady of the United States unveiled a tulip bearing her name. The variety was likewise developed by Hobaho by Dümmen Orange in collaboration with Remarkable Tulips, and is a tall, elegant fringed tulip in a friendly apricot colour, its fringes glistening in sunlight. Foeke Gardenier of Hobaho by Dümmen Orange mentioned that she said she thought her fringed tulip was very beautiful and special, and that he promised her some bulbs for her garden at the White House.

A studio still life: an ornate white porcelain multi-necked vase painted with cobalt-blue floral and scroll motifs stands on a pale blue finely textured tablecloth against a two-tone blue studio backdrop, light sky blue on the left and much darker blue on the right. The vase is filled with coral-orange and salmon-pink tulips, most still fairly closed or partly open, with small clusters of blue bell-shaped flowers tucked among them and several slender green stems carrying buds arching out toward the edges, the tallest tulip reaching near the top of the frame. No people, no text, no watermark

The catalogue also contains Royal Anthos® — the same name as the Dutch bulb and nursery stock trade association, though the two have nothing to do with each other and it is purely a collision of names. Another entry, Paul McCartney®, shows the collaboration’s taste in naming: give a variety a name people will recognise, then put it into commercial growing and promotion.

Remarkable’s Beeldbank is the practically useful resource it offers, publicly accessible and searchable, with pictures organised by variety and labelled with the shooting situation — close-up, plant and bloom combination, field, forcing, market form. The old article rendered this as “the tulip image library on the website is the standard name for tulip varieties”, which conflates two things: the image library is a channel for getting pictures, sorted by variety and use, while the varieties themselves carry the registered trademark sign, and that is what makes the names standard.

The organisation itself sits within Hobaho’s growers’ association structure, with Hobaho providing support for the administrative side — founding and statutory amendments, organising and minuting meetings, financial administration — and also handling licence management for protected varieties, covering the whole chain from application and contracts to measuring areas and collecting licence fees.
