What the State Association Is

The Landesverband Schleswig-Holstein is the regional branch of the German tree nursery association (Bund deutscher Baumschulen, BdB). Its members first joined forces in 1907 as the voluntary association of Holstein nursery owners; in the same year a national body was founded as well. The branch was dissolved in 1933 and re-formed at federal level in 1949. Today it speaks for around 250 member nurseries, acting as their employer, economic and professional body, with its office in Ellerhoop.

Nursery Traditions Since 1795

In 1795 the Hamburg merchant Baron Caspar Voght opened the first nursery of the area at Klein Flottbek near Pinneberg and brought in the Scottish nurseryman James Booth to run it and train apprentices. Part of that ground is now the Jenischpark in Hamburg-Altona. Several of those apprentices later set up nurseries of their own, and that is how the Pinneberg nursery region began. A 1926 postmark from Halstenbek read “largest forest plant propagation area in the world”, and after a visit forestry scientist Schwappach called the place “the cradle of the forest”.

Scale of the Pinneberg Nursery Region

Around 3,500 hectares of nursery land in the state, close to a fifth of the German total, sit mostly in the Pinneberg area, where some 300 nurseries operate side by side in one of the largest connected nursery regions in the world. The specialisation is pronounced: avenue and street trees, ground cover, rhododendrons and other bog plants, climbers, topiary, conifers and deciduous woody plants each have their specialists. Every second field-grown rose in Germany comes from this area, which also holds half of the country’s rose rootstock and grafting acreage; forestry seedlings account for more than 30 percent of the German production area. Consolidation continues, yet individual farms grow larger: average acreage rose from about 7.5 hectares in 2000 to roughly 14.5 hectares now, and container growing takes a rising share.

Plant Search and Quality Standards

The plant search on the association website lists member nurseries and their ranges of woody plants, together with the town they are in and what they mainly grow, so a specific group of plants can be traced back to a nursery. Delivery quality follows the FLL technical supply conditions for nursery plants, and new varieties also go through the federal woody plant assessment. The ADR mark on a rose tells that the variety spent three years in twelve independent trial gardens without any plant protection product, which is how resistance to leaf diseases is picked out.

What the Association Does

The branch passes information on to member nurseries, runs talks with outside experts on regulatory changes, represents the interests of the state’s nursery economy in politics and administration, advises members on legal, tax and business questions, and negotiates framework and pay agreements. Colleagues from member farms do this work unpaid in the various committees. On the environmental side nurseries grow clover, mustard, tagetes and winter rye as green manure and fertilise only as much as the plants actually need. A separate section on the profession and on training introduces the nursery gardener’s trade to young people who prefer working outdoors.
