Organization and history
The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) is an independent organization serving the global horticultural science community through research collaboration, science-based information exchange and sustainable innovation. Its roots reach back to the first International Horticultural Congress in Brussels in 1864, while the Society was formally registered on 27 April 1959. In 2018, its scientific structure was reorganized around Divisions covering the major fields of horticulture.
Membership and network
ISHS membership is open to researchers, educators, students and horticultural industry professionals. The Society describes a global network of more than 70,000 individuals and participating organizations, including universities, governments, institutions, libraries and commercial companies, together with about 50 Country or Region members. Its Council, Board of Directors and Executive Committee support governance, scientific programming and international communication.
Scientific structure
Divisions, Commissions and Working Groups connect specialists across the full range of horticultural science, including plant genetic resources and biotechnology, fruit and vegetable crops, ornamental plants, protected and soilless cultivation, postharvest quality, precision horticulture, landscape and urban horticulture, human health and horticulture for development. Official information lists about 100 Working Groups and more than 30 specialized symposia held annually on crop or technology-focused subjects.
Publications and knowledge exchange
ISHS disseminates research through peer-reviewed publications. Acta Horticulturae reports proceedings from ISHS symposia, the International Horticultural Congress and regional congresses, with the current official publication page listing more than 77,500 full-text articles in its archive. Chronica Horticulturae is the quarterly membership magazine. The European Journal of Horticultural Science (eJHS), published by CABI on behalf of ISHS, is the Society’s official peer-reviewed open-access journal and covers applied and fundamental research across the global horticultural value chain.
Congresses and participation
The International Horticultural Congress is held every four years and usually attracts around 3,000 delegates for presentations, concurrent symposia, field visits and professional exchange. The official calendar schedules IHC2026 for 23–28 August 2026 at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Japan under the theme “Explore the Diversity of Horticulture.” Researchers, educators, growers, distributors and other horticultural professionals can engage with international cooperation through ISHS membership, publications, Working Groups and congress activities.
