项目背景与合作机构

eFloras.org 由美国密苏里植物园与哈佛大学标本馆共同发起, 联合中国科学院植物研究所、英国邱园、美国国家自然历史博物馆等数十家研究机构的植物学家共同维护, 是当今全球最完整的网络版植物志整合平台之一。平台最早于本世纪初上线, 起初收录中国植物志、北美植物志等几个核心项目, 此后逐步加入智利、密苏里、巴基斯坦、厄瓜多尔安第斯山区等地的区域植物志, 以及尼泊尔有花植物注释名录、苔藓植物志与观赏植物专题, 形成了覆盖种子植物、蕨类与苔藓的统一检索体系。

收录范围与植物志体系

首页将所有植物志分为 Primary Floras 与其他专题项目两类: 主线植物志包括《Flora of China》(25 卷已上线, 是国际合作规模最大的中国植物志英文修订版)、《Flora of North America》(29 卷覆盖加拿大与美国)、《Flora of Chile》(6 卷)、《Flora of Missouri》(3 卷)、《Moss Flora of China》以及《Trees and shrubs of the Andes of Ecuador》; 专题项目则涵盖尼泊尔有花植物注释名录、台湾植物名录、台湾禾草图集、横断山区生物多样性摄影、互动检索表与 Hu Card Index 等。每一卷均按科 (Family) 列出条目, 用户可逐科或按字母顺序浏览属种, 累计已可检索的科超过 500 个、属超过一万个, 数据规模随各卷陆续更新而持续增长。

内容编排与检索能力

每条属种记录按统一模板编写: 形态描述、产地分布、物候期、染色体数目、模式标本信息、检索特征以及与近缘种的区分要点, 多数条目配有手绘墨线图或彩色照片作为识别参考。平台提供 All Floras 跨志检索、Advanced Search 多字段组合检索、ActKey 互动检索表以及按地理区域或植被类型筛选等多种入口, 使研究者能够快速定位到具体物种或科级类群。条目之间通过 Related Objects 与 Family List 形成相互引用, 横向关联到外部资源如 IPNI (国际植物名称索引)、Tropicos、Harvard University Herbaria 标本数据库与 NYBG 维管植物模式标本目录, 形成相对完整的引用网络。

Origins and Partner Institutions

eFloras.org is a collaborative online flora initiative co-founded and maintained by the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Harvard University Herbaria, together with dozens of partner institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany, the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Launched in the early 2000s, the portal first aggregated a handful of core floras, then gradually expanded to include regional treatments of Chile, Missouri, Pakistan, the Ecuadorian Andes and the flowering-plant checklist of Nepal, alongside a moss flora and several ornamental-plant galleries, eventually building a unified search system spanning seed plants, ferns and bryophytes.

Floras Catalogued

The home page divides the resources into Primary Floras and a long list of ancillary projects. The principal floras include Flora of China (25 volumes online, the largest English-language revision of the Chinese flora undertaken through international cooperation), Flora of North America (29 volumes covering Canada and the United States), Flora of Chile (6 volumes), Flora of Missouri (3 volumes), Moss Flora of China and Trees and shrubs of the Andes of Ecuador. Specialist projects cover the Annotated Checklist of the Flowering Plants of Nepal, plant checklists for Taiwan and South China, the Hengduan Mountains biodiversity photo archive, interactive keys by Anthony Brach and Xiangying Wen, and the Hu Card Index. The catalogues are organised by family, with more than 500 families and over ten thousand genera accessible through alphabetical browsing or hierarchical navigation.

Editorial Structure and Search

Each genus and species entry follows a consistent template covering morphology, distribution, phenology, chromosome number, type specimens, diagnostic characters and notes on distinguishing features from close relatives. Most entries are accompanied by line drawings or colour photographs to aid identification. The portal offers All Floras cross-flora searching, an Advanced Search interface with combined field queries, the ActKey interactive key tool, and filters by geographic region or vegetation type, allowing researchers to move quickly from a tentative name to a confirmed taxon. Entries are linked through Related Objects and Family List references, and reach out to companion databases such as IPNI, Tropicos, the Harvard University Herbaria records and the NYBG Vascular Plant Type Catalog, building a useful citation network around each name.

Linked Scholarly Resources

The Primary Resources section gathers closely related secondary databases, including the International Plant Names Index (IPNI), Tropicos and Tropicos Projects hosted at the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Vascular Plant Type Catalog of the New York Botanical Garden, the Harvard University Herbaria digital collections and the Hu Card Index, together with botanist biographies and a botanical publications shelf. These materials are valuable for revising names, resolving nomenclatural questions, locating type material and tracing the literature trail. The Galleries section curates field photographs contributed by individual botanists from projects such as the Hengduan Mountains biodiversity survey, the Ecuadorian Andes, northern Pakistan and Taiwan’s Yangmingshan, each image crediting the photographer and providing a tangible visual reference for the taxa described in the volumes.

Funding and Ongoing Stewardship

The portal and its component volumes have been supported by grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Starr Foundation, Fondation Franklinia and the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, with technical and infrastructural hosting provided by the Missouri Botanical Garden information technology team. Authorship of each volume follows the traditional flora convention and individual volumes are typically produced over a span of years or decades, with some still being amended and supplemented. The underlying taxonomic data remain archived within the partner institutions; the portal itself does not collect living material and is not affiliated with any commercial nursery or seed vendor. Its scope is fundamentally scholarly, with plant enthusiasts as a secondary audience, and it has become a long-term open reference for both the international botanical community and the wider horticultural world.
