协会定位与慈善使命
日本庭园协会（The Japanese Garden Society, JGS）是一家总部位于英国、面向日式庭园保护与公众教育的非营利组织，于 2011 年 4 月 8 日在英格兰与威尔士慈善委员会正式注册，注册号为 1141251。协会宗旨是「向公众普及日式庭园相关知识，支持日式庭园的建造、维护与修复工作」，汇聚了对日本本土庭园及英国境内日式风格庭园感兴趣的爱好者、专业园艺师与庭园设计师。
五大区域分会与《Shakkei》季刊
协会在英国本土设有五个区域分会，分别是北部、伦敦与东南、西南、中部与东安格利亚以及苏格兰·威尔士·爱尔兰分区，覆盖全国范围的志愿活动、区域讲座与会员花园互访。会员每年可获四期图文并茂的《Shakkei》（借景）季刊，刊物涵盖庭园营造、会员私园纪实、植物专题与历史专栏；协会档案中已累积超过一百期、逾千篇文章的往期刊物，是英国日式庭园领域重要的中文外文献资源。
日式庭园风格与设计哲学
日本庭园按体验方式可分为池泉庭、枯山水（karesansui）、回游式庭园（kaiyushiki teien）、茶庭（cha niwa）与坪庭（tsubo niwa）五大基本类型，每一类都有其历史语境与设计语汇。协会强调庭园与观赏者之间的”参与”关系——池泉庭借水面与岛屿再现仙境，枯山水以白砂与卵石象征水流，茶庭则借露地路径引导客人完成身心的过渡，这些原则是英国境内日式庭园设计与修复的共同基础。
英国名园修缮与示范项目
协会长期参与英国境内日式庭园的修缮与维护工作，重点项目包括 2019 年完工的威尔士国家植物园日式庭园（2001 年由日本政府与《每日电讯报》联合赞助、原为福原正信设计的切尔西花展金奖作品）、2017 年完成修复的约克郡哈罗盖特山谷庭园日式区，以及 2009 年重修的斯塔福德郡丹尼斯科特公墓日式庭园；北部、东南、西南各区域分会也分别对 Tatton Park、Great Ormond Street Hospital 屋顶庭园、Kew Gardens 槭树修剪工作坊等提供长期志愿支援。
教育资助与会员福利
协会设立年度教育奖学金（Bursary），单个申请最高可获 1,500 英镑资助，用于支持英国园艺师、园艺学徒或庭园设计修造从业者参加日本庭园相关的培训课程或海外工作实习；自 2022 年起连续三年为 RHS Master of Horticulture 候选人提供全额学费奖学金。普通会员可获四期季刊、线上讲座、会员专享花园参观与年度全国大会，企业会员另设铜（150 英镑）、银（250 英镑）、金（500 英镑）三档，可在《Shakkei》刊载广告并参与专项活动赞助。
Charity Status & Mission
The Japanese Garden Society (JGS) is a UK-based charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales on 8 April 2011 under registration number 1141251. Its stated aim is to educate the public about Japanese gardens and to support the construction, maintenance and restoration of Japanese gardens in the United Kingdom.
Five Regional Groups & Shakkei Journal
The Society is organised into five regional groups across the UK (Northern, London & South East, South West, Midlands & East Anglia, and Scotland, Wales & Ireland), each coordinating volunteer garden maintenance, local lectures and member garden visits. Members receive four illustrated issues of the Society’s quarterly journal Shakkei (“borrowed scenery”) per year, and the archive holds more than 100 back issues with over 1,000 articles.
Garden Styles & Design Philosophy
The Society identifies five canonical Japanese garden styles: pond-and-island gardens, dry landscape gardens (karesansui), stroll gardens (kaiyushiki teien), tea gardens (cha niwa) and courtyard gardens (tsubo niwa). Its educational framing emphasises the viewer’s active engagement with the garden, the use of natural materials such as stone and water, and the cyclical awareness of seasonal change.
Heritage Restoration Projects
JGS has led or supported major restorations including the National Botanic Garden of Wales Japanese garden (rebuilt 2019 after original 2001 Chelsea Flower Show design by Professor Masao Fukuhara), Valley Gardens Harrogate (2017) and Danescourt Cemetery in Staffordshire (2009). Regional branches continue to provide volunteer maintenance at Tatton Park, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Kew Gardens, Kingston Lacy and other sites.
Education Bursaries & Membership Tiers
The Society offers annual bursaries of up to £1,500 for UK landscapers, horticulturists and trainees undertaking Japan-relevant study or work experience, and has sponsored a full RHS Master of Horticulture scholarship in each of the past three years. Individual membership includes the quarterly journal, online lectures and members-only garden visits; corporate membership is offered in three tiers (Bronze £150, Silver £250, Gold £500) with advertising in Shakkei and event sponsorship rights.
