Historical Evolution

Qingdao Agricultural University (QAU) traces its origins to Laiyang Agricultural School, established in June 1951 by the Shandong Provincial People’s Government with two programmes in crops and fruit-and-vegetable cultivation. It was one of the earliest secondary agricultural schools founded in Shandong after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, originally placed under the Shandong Provincial Department of Agriculture. In 1958 the school was upgraded to Laiyang Agricultural College with four departments (agronomy, horticulture, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, and plant protection). In 1963 Laiyang Agricultural College was closed and merged with Laiyang County Agricultural School to form Laiyang Agricultural School; in 1976 the school was reorganised as Laiyang Agricultural University; and in 1978 the Ministry of Education approved its restoration as Laiyang Agricultural College.

Academic Disciplines and Schools

The university now offers eight academic disciplines covering agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, literature, art and law, and is organised across 26 schools and colleges with 86 undergraduate programmes enrolling more than 30,000 full-time undergraduates. It holds four first-level doctoral degree programmes (in horticulture and aquaculture among others), 15 first-level master’s degree programmes and 16 master’s professional degree categories. Aquaculture and agricultural engineering are Shandong provincial high-level disciplines, while aquaculture and plant and animal science (including grassland science) are Shandong first-class disciplines. Eight disciplines — plant and animal science, agricultural science, chemistry, engineering, environment and ecology, materials science, biology and biochemistry, and microbiology — rank in the global top 1% of ESI. Food science and engineering and veterinary medicine are Qingdao municipal key disciplines, and horticulture, food science and engineering and biological breeding are Qingdao local-discipline-and-industry integration model disciplines. Schools including the School of Horticulture, the School of Landscape Architecture and Forestry, and the School of Marine Science and Engineering are distributed across four campuses in Chengyang, Pingdu, Lanyagu and Laiyang, together with the Jiaozhou Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park.

Faculty and Talent Development

QAU’s faculty includes 67 recipients of national-level honours — including Chang Jiang Scholars, Distinguished Young Scholars, members of the Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Programme, national-level teaching masters, Ministry of Education New Century (Cross-Century) outstanding talents, specialists of the National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System and members of the Innovation Talent Promotion Plan — and more than 200 province- and ministry-level talents including Taishan Scholars, Shandong’s top-talent-by-special-case recruits and Shandong provincial teaching masters. The university hosts two national Huang Danian-style teacher teams and 58 youth innovation teams of Shandong Province, and has been honoured as an Advanced Unit for Talent Work by the Shandong provincial Party committee and government. It holds 14 national-level first-class undergraduate programme sites and six national-level featured programmes, runs 78 national- and provincial-level first-class or curriculum-ideology demonstration courses, has won 82 provincial-or-above awards in teaching competitions, and has cultivated 73 national- and provincial-level teaching achievement awards.

Research Platforms and Social Services

The university operates ten national-level science and technology innovation platforms, including the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Agro-biological Drug Creation Technology, the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Centre for Core Technology of the Animation Industry and the National Engineering Research Centre for Wheat and Maize. In the 1970s QAU developed the first cultivation theory and technology for northern-China wheat yielding 1,000 jin per mu and was awarded the 1978 National Science Conference Prize. The salt- and drought-tolerant wheat variety Qingmai 6 has been extended on more than 50 million mu since its release, lifting output by 1.744 billion kilograms and generating more than 4 billion yuan of additional economic benefits. The peanut variety Luhua 11 has generated more than 7 billion yuan of additional benefits. The apple variety Fuli was the first apple variety right successfully transferred in China; the apple variety Fuxing was transferred for 10 million yuan. In 2001 QAU produced Kang Kang and Shuang Shuang, China’s first and second healthy live somatic-cell-cloned cattle, confirming China’s leading position in somatic cell cloning. QAU leads the country in root-tuber crop and seed-industry production equipment, having hosted 39 national-level projects under the national science-and-technology support plan and the national key research-and-development plan with cumulative research funding of 310 million yuan. In 2012 the headquarters of the International Association on Mechanization of Field Experiments (IAMFE) moved from Russia to QAU in recognition of this contribution. Since 1978 QAU’s research has earned 14 national-level science and technology awards.

International Cooperation and Engagement

QAU’s international cooperation began with the Sino-Canadian Business School in 2002; in 2005 the university enrolled its first Sino-foreign cooperative-education students, in 2007 it began admitting international students, and in 2008 the School of International Education was formally established. More than 2,000 international students from over 30 countries across five continents have since enrolled at language, undergraduate and master’s levels, all studying at the Chengyang campus under the university’s international-student teaching-quality assurance system. The Baths Future Agricultural Science and Technology College runs joint agricultural programmes with overseas partners, and the university hosts the SCO Countries Modern Agricultural Sustainable Development Research Centre, the Shandong-US Veterinary Biotechnology Cooperation Research Centre, the Shandong-US Peanut Quality Improvement International Joint Laboratory and the Shandong-Korea Food Biotechnology Cooperation Research Centre — platforms through which QAU supports Shandong’s agricultural going-out strategy under the Belt and Road Initiative.
