About the Society
The International Palm Society (IPS), founded in 1956, is one of the most influential professional organizations dedicated to palms (family Arecaceae) worldwide. The society is committed to palm conservation, research, and sustainable use, providing a platform for academic exchange and resource sharing through its scientific journal “Palms” (continuously published since 1956), extensive archives, webinars, and travel adventures. The society currently has over 19,000 active members, and its forum Palmtalk.org has accumulated over one million professional posts.
Conservation Mission
The International Palm Society places palm conservation at the heart of its mission. The society warns that several palm species, including Ravenea louvelii, face imminent risk of extinction without urgent conservation action. Through its “Save the Species” initiative, the society raises funds to support in-situ conservation, ex-situ preservation, and artificial propagation research for endangered palms. Members can directly support these efforts through donations or participation in conservation projects.
Membership Benefits
Society members enjoy extensive benefits: a subscription to the scientific journal “Palms” and its complete archive database, free participation in online webinars organized by the society, priority access to palm habitat expedition travels organized by the society, and the opportunity to engage with 19,000 palm enthusiasts through the Palmtalk.org online community forum. The society organizes multiple international palm habitat expeditions each year, leading members to explore wild palm habitats, legendary public palm gardens, and superb private palm collections around the world.
Publications and Resources
The society’s official journal “Palms” serves as an important academic publication in palm research, covering the latest findings in palm taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and cultivation techniques. The journal archive contains all issues since its founding in 1956, making it an indispensable literature resource for palm researchers. The society’s website also provides rich online resources including palm databases, cultivation guides, and variety catalogs, helping members and the public better understand and protect palms.
