Nursery Overview

Garden Jewels Nursery is a family-run home nursery in the Point Loma area of San Diego, California, operated by Katie Hanna Lutz and Cheryl Haimsohn. Both are native San Diegans who still live in Point Loma, and the nursery is set in their hillside home yard. The nursery grows and sells Epiphyllums — also called Orchid Cactus, Jungle Cactus, Epi-Hybrids and Species, Oxypetalum, Hooker-i, E. Crenatum, and other semi-shade epiphytic plants — and is one of the primary sources for epiphyllum cuttings, rooted cuttings, and blooming-size plants in San Diego County.

Family Heritage

The horticultural roots of the nursery reach back four generations. Katie’s great-grandfather Aaron Miller established a nursery in the Walla Walla Valley of Washington State in the late 1800s, and at one point it was reported as the largest nursery west of the Mississippi. His son George Washington Miller continued the business, and George’s daughter Gerita Lucile Miller Hanna became Katie’s mother. Katie’s father, Dr. Curtis M. Hanna, enjoyed tending his hillside garden overlooking San Diego Bay. Katie’s grandfather Edward Hanna, in his eighties and nineties, kept a daily routine of an hour or two of gardening, maintaining fruit trees and ornamental plantings. This family tradition of garden stewardship has carried forward to Katie and Cherie, whose Point Loma yard is filled year-round with seasonal color, fragrance, and visiting wildlife.

Products and Ordering

The nursery sells epiphyllums in four growth stages: unrooted cuttings of 5 to 9 inches at $19, expected to bloom in roughly 3 years; rooted cuttings shipped bareroot at $29, expected to bloom in about 2.5 years; bareroot epiphyllum plants at $39, expected to bloom in 1.5 to 2 years; and 1-gallon large plants shipped bareroot at $49, expected to bloom within 1 year. Mature blooming-size mother plants are available only at the home nursery and are not shipped. Mail-order shipping is a flat $10 per order, with free shipping refunded for any order of three or more single cuttings. Orders are not shipped when overnight temperatures fall below 36°F, but 96-hour UniHeat Mega Shipping Warmers are available at $10 each. Mail-order is paused December through February and reopens March 1.
