
康奈尔大学园艺科的历史定位与常春藤盟校唯一性
美国康奈尔大学综合植物科学学院园艺科 (School of Integrative Plant Science Horticulture Section, 简称 SIPS 园艺科) 是常春藤盟校中唯一的园艺专业, 隶属于康奈尔大学农业与生命科学学院 (CALS)。园艺科扎根于纽约州伊萨卡校区与日内瓦 Cornell AgriTech 两个校区, 在 50 多门植物相关课程中承担教学, 拥有 50 多位终身轨与兼职教师以及 100 多名博士后、技术与管理人员, 在 40 多名园艺学研究生和 60 多名植物科学本科专业方向学生的培养中扮演核心角色, 服务纽约州、全美乃至全球的水果、蔬菜与景观植物科研与产业需求。

园艺科围绕五大研究方向展开教学与科研: 一是蔬菜方向 (Cornell vegetables), 聚焦绿叶菜、番茄、西葫芦的育种与栽培创新; 二是果树方向 (Cornell fruit resources), 围绕纽约州农业核心的苹果、葡萄、莓果开展种植策略研究; 三是观赏植物方向, 包括花卉球根研究项目 (Flower Bulb Research Program) 与温室园艺; 四是城市景观方向, 依托城市园艺研究所 (Urban Horticulture Institute) 提升城市生态系统中植物的功能; 五是草坪方向 (Cornell Turfgrass Program), 让草坪、运动场和高尔夫球场成为可持续的环境资产。此外园艺科还设有 Cornell 园艺学习项目 (Cornell garden-based learning), 服务家庭园艺爱好者与中小学教师。
课程体系与本科研究生培养路径
园艺科与综合植物科学学院其他四个科 (植物生物学 / 植物育种与遗传学 / 植物病理与微生物学 / 土壤与作物科学) 紧密合作, 提供 150 多门植物相关课程。本科植物科学专业 (Plant Sciences Major, B.S.) 学生除生物学、化学、统计学基础课外, 还要完成四门核心植物课程和按顾问指导选定 10 学分以上 3000+ 高阶课程形成专项方向, 包括可持续植物生产、植物育种、植物病害、进化与多样性、植物分子细胞发育生物学、药用植物、公共花园管理、土壤科学等。本科生还需完成电子作品集 (ePortfolio) 并参与至少一项实践学习。园艺方向研究生项目 (MS / PhD) 设有四个专业方向: 园艺作物育种 (Horticultural Crop Breeding)、园艺作物管理 (Horticulture Crop Management)、园艺作物生理与生态 (Physiology & Ecology of Horticultural Crops)、人与植物的相互作用 (Human-Plant Interactions); 整合植物科学硕士 (MPS) 提供与园艺相关的控制环境农业、大麻科学、公共花园领导力、葡萄栽培、植物保护等多个一年期 STEM 方向。

History and the Ivy League Distinction of the Cornell Horticulture Section
The Horticulture Section of the School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) at Cornell University is the only horticulture program in the Ivy League, situated within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Working from the Ithaca campus and the Cornell AgriTech campus in Geneva, the section contributes to more than fifty plant-related courses and supports a faculty of fifty tenured, tenure-track and adjunct scholars together with over one hundred postdoctoral associates, technical and administrative staff. The program trains more than forty horticulture graduate students and over sixty plant-sciences majors each year, generating and extending knowledge about fruits, vegetables and landscape plants for the benefit of New York State, the United States and the world.
Five Research Focus Areas: Vegetables, Fruits, Ornamentals, Urban Landscapes and Turfgrass
The Horticulture Section organizes its teaching and research around five interconnected focus areas. The vegetables team breeds new varieties of leafy greens, tomatoes and squash and innovates cultivation practices for the Northeast. The fruit team works on innovative strategies for apples, grapes and berries, the central fruit crops of New York agriculture. The ornamental team runs the Flower Bulb Research Program and the greenhouse horticulture track, introducing new flower varieties and sustainable growing strategies. The Urban Horticulture Institute studies how plants enhance quality of life in urban ecosystems. The Cornell Turfgrass Program develops sustainable management practices for lawns, sports fields and golf courses. The section also operates Cornell Garden-Based Learning, which enables home gardeners, children and adult educators to transform landscapes and lives.
Curriculum, Undergraduate and Graduate Study Pathways
Working closely with the four sister sections of the School of Integrative Plant Science (Plant Biology, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences), the section participates in more than one hundred and fifty plant-related courses. Undergraduate Plant Sciences majors (B.S.) complete foundational work in biology, chemistry and statistics, four core plant-focused courses, a concentration of ten or more credits of upper-level (3000+) plant courses chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor, an ePortfolio, and at least one experiential learning opportunity. Graduate students may pursue the MS or PhD in the Field of Horticulture, choosing among four concentrations: Horticultural Crop Breeding, Horticulture Crop Management, Physiology and Ecology of Horticultural Crops, and Human-Plant Interactions. The one-year STEM-designated Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Integrative Plant Science offers horticulture-related concentrations including Controlled Environment Agriculture, Hemp Science, Cannabis Science, Public Garden Leadership, Viticulture, Plant Protection, Climate Change and Agriculture, Geospatial Applications, Plant Biotechnology and Soil Science.
Research Infrastructure Supported by Cornell AgriTech and AES
The section’s research enterprise is anchored by Cornell AgriTech in Geneva and the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station network. Cornell AgriTech hosts the oldest apple breeding program in the United States and has released seventy apple varieties, including Empire, Jonagold, SnapDragon, RubyFrost, Cordera, Pink Luster and Firecracker. New York is the second-largest apple-producing state in the country, with over fifty thousand acres under cultivation, more than thirty-one million bushels produced each year, and over two billion one hundred million US dollars in direct and indirect economic impact supporting more than twelve thousand jobs. Cornell AgriTech drives this success through breeding, integrated pest management and orchard systems research. The Homer C. Thompson Vegetable Research Farm, located ten miles from the Ithaca campus, is a 260-acre facility with a 35-acre organic parcel certified by NOFA-NY Certified Organic LLC, supporting breeding and variety trials for rice, kale, cabbage, cherry tomatoes, cover crops, potatoes, cucurbits, peppers, peas, beans, malting barley and squash.
Alumni Network and Industry Impact Across New York State and Beyond
Faculty and alumni extend the section’s impact across the New York horticulture industry and beyond. Recent Cornell-led advances include the soft-robot strawberry gripper that uses stretchable fiber-optic sensors to pick ripe fruit without bruising, the Galaxy Suite of grape tomatoes that added three new varieties, and the Northstar broccoli hybrid co-developed with the global seed company Bejo Zaden to tolerate warmer, more unpredictable Northeastern conditions. The section also co-runs the Cornell Assistantship for Horticulture in Africa (CAHA), and through Cornell Cooperative Extension it delivers the Garden-Based Learning program and Urban Vegetable Trials in Public Gardens to New York communities, schools and home gardeners.
