About the Nursery
Kwekerij Margriet is a small family-run hobby nursery (Hobbykwekerij) near the village of Sint Pancras in the province of North Holland in the north of the Netherlands, with about twenty-five years of history behind it. It was started by one enthusiast who wanted to grow the perennials and long-flowering varieties that ordinary garden centres did not carry, and has stayed that way ever since. The nursery’s defining feature is its pesticide-free, pollinator-friendly approach: the owner states openly that no chemical sprays or synthetic fertilisers are used, which makes the site a comfortable place for bees, butterflies and other insects. The nursery is also a partner in the local “Tegelwippen Dijk en Waard” community scheme, which encourages residents to swap paved surfaces for planting.
Site and Visit Experience
Over the past twenty-five years the site has grown into a small but complete nursery: a workshop, four greenhouses (kassen) and a trial garden (proeftuin) where visitors can see plants growing “for real” before many of them reach their peak flower at the customer’s garden. The owner is very much a hands-on guide: she will pull up a phone photo of the variety in full flower, walk through soil type, sun needs, mature size and pruning timing, and let the customer decide. The atmosphere is closer to visiting a friend’s garden than shopping at a retail garden centre, and the open-by-appointment rhythm fits that style.
Plant Range and Services
The core catalogue covers “the long-flowering, hard-to-find perennials that garden centres don’t usually stock” alongside annuals in season, bulbs and selected edibles. Regularly featured plants include Vernonia crinita ‘Mammuth’, Aster ‘Cotswold Gem’, Penstemon digitalis ‘Huskers Red’, Silphium mohrii, Amsonia ciliata and Phygelius ‘Colorburst Deep Red’ — a deliberately niche-leaning line that suits ecological garden designers and home gardeners looking for something different. The nursery also offers a separate “Tuinadvies Margriet” design service that handles everything from a small plant border to a complete new-build garden plan.
Season, Supplies and Opening
Opening hours are deliberately short: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11:00 to 16:00. This is a small-scale, slow-rhythm operation that lets the owner focus on propagation, customer plant orders and consultations on the days in between. Bulbs are overwintered indoors in the colder months, and the rest of the year the nursery uses Bio Kultura organic potting soil and compost as the basis for its plant propagation. The Bio Kultura line also lets customers take the same organic growing medium home for their own beds, so the nursery’s ecological approach extends beyond the gate. All in all, Kwekerij Margriet is a quietly distinctive North-Holland family nursery for gardeners who appreciate hand-grown, chemical-free perennials and a small-scale, by-appointment visit experience.
Community and Local Engagement
Beyond selling plants and offering design advice, the nursery is closely tied to the Sint Pancras and wider Dijk en Waard area. As well as the Tegelwippen community scheme, the owner engages with the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the wider Dutch horticultural community, occasionally joining events run for local readers and school gardening projects. Customers are a mix of home gardeners, ecological landscape designers, fellow small nurseries and teachers, and the nursery is often cited as a typical “you can actually talk to the person who grew the plant” North-Holland family specialist. For anyone interested in small-scale, chemical-free perennials and the kind of in-person advice that only a small nursery can offer, Kwekerij Margriet is well worth a Wednesday afternoon visit.
