Website and the people behind it
Alpines.dk is run by Kirsten Andersen and Lars Hansen, who document a private alpine plant garden at Herskind, a village about 15 km west of Aarhus, Denmark. The two describe themselves as amateurs rather than professional gardeners. They started reshaping what had been a vegetable patch and lawn into a rock garden roughly twenty-five years ago, and now cultivate more than three thousand plant taxa on a nine hundred square metre plot.
Layout and soil work
The local clay is heavy, so large amounts of sand were added when the rock beds were built. Apart from the beds adjoining the greenhouse, the plot is essentially flat; differences in level were created by piling up soil and sand. Stones used are Bornholm granite, Nexø sandstone and edged fieldstones. Hedges of yew and boxwood frame the garden, and granite paths are infilled with Cotula minima.
Tufa and troughs
Some of the most demanding alpines are grown in tufa. Holes of 20 mm diameter are drilled into the porous limestone, filled with sand and planted up; after a few years the surface weathers and seedlings establish themselves directly on the stone. The troughs were originally cast from hypertufa but began to crumble after about ten years, so they have been replaced with sandstone and granite troughs sourced from Poland.
Greenhouse and bulb collection
A 55 m² lean-to greenhouse is divided into 28 m², 18 m² and 9 m² sections kept at 2 °C, frost-free and unheated respectively. The collection focuses on dwarf Narcissus, Fritillaria, Colchicum, Iris, Sternbergia and Tulipa, with a sizeable set of Oxalis laciniata, O. adenophylla and O. enneaphylla kept in pots for selection, plus several Cyclamen species. Around the first of August each year a surplus bulb list is published and can be requested by email.
Propagation and plant sales
Many of the plants are unavailable from Danish nurseries, so seeds are bought from overseas collectors and bulbs from specialist suppliers abroad. Seed sowing is the main propagation method, with cuttings used for woody plants and division of bulbs at the annual repotting. Kirsten Andersen attends the plant market at Geografisk Have in Kolding; surplus bulbs and plants are sold on the open garden days and through the annual list.
