期刊定位与办刊理念
《美国 城市栖息地期刊》(Urban Habitats) 是由布鲁克林植物园 (Brooklyn Botanic Garden) 与罗格斯大学 (Rutgers University) 合作设立的「城市恢复生态学中心」Center for Urban Restoration Ecology, CURE 于 2003 年 12 月创办的开放获取同行评审电子期刊, 自创刊起即面向全球征稿。期刊关注城市生态学下的城市栖息地恢复、保护生物学、城市植物学、景观建筑与设计等领域的原创研究、综述及实践报告, 由国际同行评审并免费全文发布, ISSN 1541-7115。

《美国 城市栖息地期刊》执行严格的同行评审制度: 主编初筛后送两位相关领域评审人, 评审依据原创性、结论逻辑、数据呈现、引文、措辞清晰度、术语可读性、图表质量等八项维度评分, 评审意见返回作者修订, 不接受由同一私人资助方评审同方论文以避利益冲突; 期刊全文免费开放获取, 不向作者收费、也不向作者付稿酬, 作者保留版权并授予期刊独家许可, 期刊被多个参考图书馆长期存档。
移交 Eagle Hill Institute 与改刊 Urban Naturalist 沿革
Eagle Hill Institute (拥有 Northeastern Naturalist、Southeastern Naturalist、Caribbean Naturalist 等同业评审刊物出版经验) 接管《美国 城市栖息地期刊》后, 在 2014 年将其改刊为《Urban Naturalist》, 编辑风格延续, 涵盖全球城市自然史科学方方面面, 原版期刊访问权限保留, 本刊作为七卷城市生态学开放存取学术阵地仍有重要历史与文献价值。
Founding Vision and Editorial Scope
Urban Habitats is an open-access, peer-reviewed electronic journal founded in December 2003 by the Center for Urban Restoration Ecology (CURE), a collaboration between Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Rutgers University. The journal publishes original research, review articles, and practitioner reports in urban ecology, urban habitat restoration, conservation biology, urban botany, landscape architecture and design, with ISSN 1541-7115 and full free access online.
Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board
The journal is led by Editor-in-Chief Susan Pell, Director of Science at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The editorial board includes Janet Marinelli (CURE steering committee member) and Elizabeth Peters (Director of Publishing at Brooklyn Botanic Garden), with copy editing by Medi Ford and website management by Dave Allen, all from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the journal’s primary publisher.
Core Themes in Urban Habitat Restoration
Seven volumes published between 2003 and 2012 cover urban floras (vol.1), history, ecology, and restoration of degraded urban wetlands (vol.2), birds in the urban environment (vol.3), green roofs and biodiversity (vol.4), what is local? (vol.5), frog habitat assessment, avian habitat, soil-metal contamination, and urban restoration in Hamilton, New Zealand (vol.6), plus bee occurrence, oyster reproduction, ovenbird populations, and beyond-the-natives-debate (vol.7).
Peer Review and Open-Access Practices
The journal applies a two-reviewer peer-review model: editors filter submissions, then two expert referees score papers across eight criteria including originality, logical conclusions, data clarity, citation consistency, prose clarity, jargon minimization, and visual aids. Conflict-of-interest rules bar reviewers funded by the same private source as authors. Open-access publication is free for readers, with no fees charged to authors and copyright retained by authors under exclusive licensing.
Transition to Eagle Hill Institute and Urban Naturalist Continuation
In 2014, Eagle Hill Institute, the publisher of Northeastern Naturalist, Southeastern Naturalist, and Caribbean Naturalist, took over the journal and launched Urban Naturalist as its interdisciplinary successor, covering all aspects of natural history sciences as they pertain to urban areas worldwide. The original Urban Habitats archive remains accessible, preserving its seven volumes of foundational urban-ecology scholarship.
