From a 1942 tomato nursery to a garden centre

Torwood Garden Centre is near Larbert in Falkirk, Scotland. It began as a nursery growing tomatoes just after the Second World War and has been in the Stevenson family’s hands since 1942, with the third and fourth generations running it today. More than eighty years on, what began as a nursery is now a full garden centre.

Plant material is no longer the whole story. Alongside it are garden furniture, greenhouses, garden decor, home and gifts, clothing, an expanded food hall and two cafés. Customers come from the Forth Valley and well beyond, the place being easy to reach by both road and rail, with several well known local attractions within easy reach of the door.

How the plant area is laid out

Plants are the centre’s main event. They are arranged alphabetically and sorted so you can shop by what you need: varieties proven to perform in Scottish gardens, many of them AGM winners; collections assembled for awkward positions such as damp or shade; and themed displays that take you from a single pot to a whole border. Three areas carry the centre’s own character: a large range of maples, bamboo and ferns, alpines and miniature gardens, and plants raised in Scotland or brought back by the Scottish plant hunters.

There is also an indoor plant section for houseplants, specialising in cacti, succulents, orchids and air plants, with fresh stock arriving weekly through the season alongside composts and feed. Plants are bought in from reputable growers in the UK and Europe and are regularly inspected.

A five year plant guarantee

The thing Torwood is best known for is its five year guarantee on hardy nursery stock: plant it, care for it properly and if it fails, bring it back with the receipt within five years and it is replaced. Hardy plants are kept outdoors in the plant area all year, which is what makes them tough enough to stand behind. The exclusions are spelled out: annuals, bedding plants, houseplants, bulbs, vegetables and seed are not covered, nor are plants known to be short lived.

If something goes wrong, photograph the plant and send it over first, and do not take cuttings or bring in any infested material. Once a fault is agreed, the return is settled as a replacement or a credit note usable across the garden centre and restaurants, valid for three months. Plants that died from a lack of water or care are not covered.

Awards and recognition

As an independent family run business, Torwood has collected a fair few awards. It was Garden Centre of the Year for Scotland (Stirlingshire) in 2023 and for Scotland (Falkirk) in 2022, both from the Prestige Awards, having won the Scotland award in 2020 as well. In 2019 it took an excellence award for local community engagement from SME News and the Scottish Enterprise Awards, along with several Falkirk Herald Business Awards nominations.

Blossoms Restaurant was voted Café of the Year by readers of the Falkirk Herald. It does breakfasts, lunches and afternoon tea, and is known for its cakes and scones; in 2025 it also took a LUXlife Excellence Award as best garden centre restaurant in Stirlingshire. The second café, Rousay’s, is the pet friendly one, serving soup and sandwiches, and running its own doggy afternoon teas.

Visiting and getting more out of the visit

Opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, 10am on Sunday, with the restaurant closing at 5. Parking is free and there are accessible bays and a drop off point near the entrance. Both cafés are wheelchair friendly. Dogs are welcome through the centre, kept on a lead and away from carpeted areas.

There is more to it than shopping. Staff will load bulky purchases into your car, there is a local delivery service for items too big or heavy for the boot, and you can get advice or join demonstrations and masterclasses at the potting bench. In winter the centre runs Christmas events including meetings with Santa and a dog slot, booked in advance.
