学会概况与皇家特许身份
英国特许园艺学院 Chartered Institute of Horticulture（CIH，园艺.org.uk）是英国与爱尔兰地区唯一的全国性园艺专业特许机构，1984 年以 Institute of Horticulture 名称成立，2014 年 7 月 21 日获得英国皇家特许状（Royal Charter）后启用现名。CIH 同时也是国际园艺科学学会（International Society for Horticulture Science, ISHS）的成员机构，把 ISHS 关于「园艺」「专业园艺学家」与「园艺科学家」的官方定义纳入自身章程（2012 年 3 月通过）。学会作为注册慈善机构运作，其章程定位是「团结一个不断发展的职业」（uniting a growing profession），把从事食物与非食物作物、景观修复、园艺治疗等不同职业路径的从业者纳入同一专业社区。
1984 创立与 2014 皇家特许脉络
1984 年成立之初，Institute of Horticulture 的目标是建立覆盖英国与爱尔兰全境的专业园艺协作平台。1990 年代起学会逐步设立区域分会并发展会籍制度，到 2014 年正式取得皇家特许状后学会身份由民间专业团体升级为具有皇家背书的特许机构，特许状不仅提升了园艺行业对高水平技能与持续专业发展（Continuing Professional Development, CPD）的要求，也让 CIH 在与政府及政策制定方对话时获得更强的发言权。现任理事会以 Fellow 为主干，主席团成员包括 Tony Girard（2006-2008）、Leigh Morris（2010-2012）、Andrew Gill（2012-2014）、Owen Doyle（2016-2018）、Gerald Bonner（2018-2021）和 Susan Nicholas（2021-2023）等历任主席。
六类会员制度与专业等级
CIH 设有六类会员，对应不同的资历与年费。学生会员（Student）面向在校攻读园艺相关课程者，免年费；准会员（Associate，ACIHort）年费 105 英镑，需累计最多 11 个学术或从业经验分点；正式会员（Member，MCIHort）年费 134 英镑，需累计至少 12 个分点；注册会员（Career Builder）面向处于职业早期、需要积累 CPD 学时的从业者；会士（Fellow，FCIHort）年费 168 英镑，需由现任 Fellow 推荐并经理事会与年度会员大会（AGM）批准方可授予，用以表彰对行业的杰出贡献；特许园艺学家（Chartered Horticulturist，CHort）则是 CIH 体系中的最高专业头衔，需在 Member 或 Fellow 基础上额外加 119 英镑年费并提交相当于硕士水平的核心能力证明（含园艺知识、领导与管理、沟通与人际三大维度），每年完成 30 小时 CPD 方可维持资格。
五项年度奖项与 CIH Award 50 名额
CIH 颁发的五项年度奖项覆盖教育、创新与个人贡献。President’s Award 由理事会遴选，授予对园艺行业有突出贡献者；Norah Stucken Award 面向对园艺行业产生显著影响的创新项目，历届得主包括 2008 年的 Sainsbury’s「Concept Orchards」英国本土苹果复兴项目、2009 年的 Thanet Earth 水培温室、2011 年的 Paignton Zoo Verticrop 玻璃温室水培系统与 2016 年的 GroCycle 咖啡渣菌菇城市园艺项目；Aberconway Award 颁给当年度最佳园艺学位论文，与英国皇家园艺学会（Royal Horticultural Society, RHS）合作评选；CIH Award 是学会最高个人荣誉，同时在册人数上限仅为 50 位，现任得主包括 Alan Titchmarsh、Roy Lancaster、Raymond Evison、Christopher Brickell、Tim Smit 等知名园艺界人士；Pam Pointer Award 则用于表彰在学术与实践两方面均有突出表现的园艺学生。
YHOY 大赛、五年战略与区域分会
YHOY（Young Horticulturist of the Year）是 CIH 面向 30 岁以下从业者组织的全国性青年园艺师年度大赛，奖池总额 8000 英镑，优胜者可获 2500 英镑的 Percy Thrower 旅行助学金，由 Shropshire Horticultural Society（什鲁斯伯里花展主办方）赞助。学会 2022 年发布五年战略（2022-2027），愿景表述为「Plants and Horticulturists; securing our future」，目标是通过会籍、教育与培训机会、同行网络与最佳实践分享，把会员逐步推向特许园艺学家（CHort）级别，同时呼应联合国可持续发展目标中的零饥饿、健康福祉与陆地生态三项议题。CIH 在英国与爱尔兰设立区域分会，由全国 AGM（2026 年 7 月 16 日线上举行）统筹年度工作议程，并通过 Grow Careers 项目对接艺术与设计、商业生产与食品、健康与福祉、遗产保护、植物科学与技术、体育休闲绿地等六大职业方向。
About the CIH and its Royal Charter status
The Chartered Institute of Horticulture (CIH) is the only organisation that brings together all professionals across the United Kingdom and Ireland horticulture industry. Founded in 1984 as the Institute of Horticulture, it received its Royal Charter on 21 July 2014 and adopted its present name. CIH is a constituent member of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and operates as a registered charity, drawing together horticulturists from food crops, non-food crops, landscape restoration, therapeutic horticulture and other related fields under a single professional body.
Founding in 1984 and the 2014 Royal Charter
The Institute of Horticulture was established in 1984 with the stated aim of fostering close relationships between all sectors of professional horticulture across the UK and Ireland. Regional branches were introduced from the 1990s onwards, building up the membership structure that exists today. The Royal Charter granted on 21 July 2014 marked the moment when the organisation moved from a learned society to a chartered professional body with statutory standing, enhancing both the status of horticulture as a profession requiring high-level skills and continuous professional development, and the institute’s voice with government and policymakers. Past presidents include Charles Notcutt, Tony Girard, Leigh Morris, Andrew Gill, Owen Doyle, Gerald Bonner and Susan Nicholas.
Six-tier membership structure
CIH operates a six-tier membership structure. Student membership is free for those studying towards a horticulture qualification. Associate membership (ACIHort) costs 105 pounds per year and requires up to 11 points from academic qualifications and work experience. Member (MCIHort) costs 134 pounds per year with a minimum of 12 points. Career Builder membership supports those in the early stages of their professional development. Fellowship (FCIHort) costs 168 pounds per year, requires nomination by an existing Fellow plus two supporters, and is ratified by the Council of Trustees at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Chartered Horticulturist (CHort) is the highest professional grade, available to Members or Fellows for an additional 119 pounds per year, requiring candidates to demonstrate Master-level competencies across horticulture knowledge, leadership and management, and communication and interpersonal skills, with 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) each year to maintain the status.
Five annual awards and the 50-person CIH Award
CIH administers five annual awards. The President’s Award is selected by the Council for outstanding contribution to horticulture. The Norah Stucken Award recognises innovative projects; past recipients include Sainsbury’s Concept Orchards (2008), Thanet Earth hydroponic greenhouse (2009), Paignton Zoo’s Verticrop glasshouse system (2011) and GroCycle’s coffee-ground urban mushroom project (2016). The Aberconway Award is presented jointly with the Royal Horticultural Society for the best annual horticulture dissertation. The CIH Award is the institute’s highest individual honour, with a cap of only 50 holders at any one time; current holders include Alan Titchmarsh, Roy Lancaster, Raymond Evison, Christopher Brickell and Tim Smit. The Pam Pointer Award recognises student achievement in both academic and practical pursuits.
YHOY competition, 2022-2027 strategy and regional branches
The Young Horticulturist of the Year (YHOY) competition is organised by CIH for practitioners under 30, offering a total prize fund of 8,000 pounds and a 2,500 pound Percy Thrower travel bursary for the overall winner, sponsored by the Shropshire Horticultural Society which organises the Shrewsbury Flower Show. CIH’s 2022-2027 five-year strategy sets out the vision “Plants and Horticulturists; securing our future”, with the objective of progressing members toward Chartership through education, training, peer networking and best-practice sharing, while addressing three UN Sustainable Development Goals: zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, and life on land. Regional branches across the UK and Ireland coordinate local events; the Annual General Meeting was held online via Zoom on 16 July 2026. The Grow Careers programme maps career pathways across art and design, business production and food, health and wellbeing, heritage conservation, plant science and technology, and sports leisure green space.
