Founding and Membership

The Nederlandse Varenvereniging (NVV) was officially founded in 1989 by a group of amateur fern enthusiasts in the Netherlands. The society brings together hobbyists, nursery professionals and a small number of researchers who share an interest in ferns and fern-allies. The great majority of members are amateur gardeners who grow ferns in their own gardens, balconies or greenhouses, while some focus on spore propagation, wild habitats or rare specialist taxa. A small number of Belgian and other European members also participate. Current membership stands at around three hundred.

Journal, Website and Knowledge Archive

The society’s journal, VarenVaria, is the most consistent channel through which members share cultivation notes, field observations and reports on newly introduced species. The official website at varenvereniging.nl complements the journal by maintaining an archive of reference articles, a spore exchange list and identification guides. Entry-level topics such as “what are ferns”, “fern morphology”, “fern classification” and “how to write fern names” sit alongside more advanced articles including “ferns and the law”, “front-line research on wild ferns” and “ferns in the middle of the Atlantic”.

Regular Activities and Annual Gatherings

The society runs a near year-round programme of meetings, workshops, field trips, private garden visits and plant-exchange fairs. Two general members’ meetings are held each year, in spring and in autumn. The spring meeting is held in Rumpt, while the autumn meeting rotates between locations chosen by the membership. Specialised events include hands-on days at Kasteeltuinen Arcen, identification walks at the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, and field excursions to Kuinderbos led by fern specialist Piet Bremer. Microscopy courses, multi-day visits to other botanical gardens and a three-to-five-day trip to Germany are among the most popular annual fixtures.

Long-Standing Collaboration with the Leiden Botanical Garden

The society maintains a long-standing relationship with the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, a garden that has existed since at least 1594, when Carolus Clusius laid out a system garden based on the most modern botanical insights of his time. Former society chairman Harry Roskam has worked for many years as a volunteer in the garden, where he has built up a well-developed fern section. Each year the society holds an identification day at the Leiden fern garden, giving members the chance to see rare cultivated species up close and take part in on-site determination exercises.

International Contacts and the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary

The society keeps regular contact with the German Fachgruppe Farne, the Schweizerische Vereinigung der Farnfreunde in Switzerland and the British Pteridological Society. Some members are internationally active researchers; the herbarium botanist Peter Hovenkamp, for example, is a long-standing contributor to international pteridological literature. In 2014 the society celebrated its twenty-fifth jubilee in Heemstede with a programme of lectures, open days and excursions put together by Fons Slot. The Hardy Fern Foundation Quarterly and Fiddlehead Forum both devoted pages to the jubilee. Bert Hennipman, who served as an officer of the society from 1989 to 1996, was commemorated by international colleagues when he passed away in 2014.
