Shane Smith (born March 1954) is the founder and director of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, Wyoming’s only public botanic garden, established in 1977. A volunteer-centered project emphasizing community and sustainability, the gardens include 9 acres of developed grounds, one of the nation’s oldest and largest solar-heated greenhouses, and the Paul Smith Children’s Village, which in 2008 became the first public children’s garden to receive LEED Platinum designation. Smith holds a BS in Horticultural Science, completed the Loeb Fellowship in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard University in 1989–1990, and is a registered Horticultural Therapist (HT) with the American Horticultural Therapy Association. He also authored The Frost Free Greenhouse (1982) for the U.S. Department of Energy, the first book on unheated solar greenhouse farming.
