Events in 2026
The January 17 native plant lecture on Carnivorous Plants, by Brandon Everett, Horticulturalist and Manager at the Edge of the Woods Native Plant Nursery was excellent.
Our hosts Joe and Joanne Patti arranged for us to be served a delicious buffet. The turnout was good and the raffle of ferns from Gardner’s Nursery and a conifer donated by Rick Ray was quite popular.
An interest survey for ideas for 2026 trips and events was handed outat the luncheon. Janet Whitefield and David Lauer tallied and reported on the results. The field trips for the year will be outlined in the membership flyer at the Flower Show, and dates will be announced shortly afterwards on both the website and in an email.
2026 Philadelphia Flower Show
The 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show ran from February 28 to March 8. Fifty years ago in 1976 was the first year that DVFWS exhibited at the Convention Center.
The 2026 Flower Show Theme was ROOTED: the Origins of American Gardening. It celebrated the history, traditions, and cultural stories that shaped American gardening. Ferns were among the first plants on the planet. The fern craze among the Victorians in the 1860s kicked off a frenzy of ferns and plants under glass at the end of the 1800s and into the 1900s.
This year over 30 different ferns filled the exhibit shelves.
Kudos to the 28 volunteers from the Delaware Valley Fern & Wildflower Society who staffed most of the shifts for the week, and we sold over 110 of our Fern Care booklets for Indoor Tropical Ferns and for Hardy Native Ferns. About 108 people from eight different societies volunteered 183 slots at our exhibit booth. This critical mass populated the Plant Society corner of the Flower Show, drawing more visitors to tell us their stories of gardening. This year the Delaware Valley Rhododendron Society joined us after a five year absence from the Flower Show and the Delaware Valley Rock Garden Society displayed 6 troughs in a greatly expanded space, replacing the Liberty Bell Gesneriad Society. They and the African Violet Society of Springfield displayed only a signup sheet and added a new member at their very next meeting. The Mid-Atlantic Carniverous Society had their own 10×12 exhibit space. on the other side of the Begonia and Indoor Plant Society booth. They and the Philadelphia Cactus and Succulent Society swept the awards in the Horticourt and added dozens of new members.
