从 Key West 起步的兰花影像档案

Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia（缩写 IOSPE）由 Jay Pfahl 于 1997 年 4 月在佛罗里达州 Key West 创建，最初只是他本人收藏的几百张兰花照片，配上栽培笔记的个人页面。几年之后，各地种植者开始把自己拍摄的物种照片寄给他，站点逐渐从个人记录长成公开的物种参考库，并由 Pfahl 经营至今。

From a Key West Hobby to a Global Orchid Photo Archive

Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia (IOSPE) was started by Jay Pfahl in April 1997 in Key West, Florida, as a personal page holding a few hundred orchid photos from his own collection, together with notes on how to grow each species. Within a few weeks growers around the world began sending in their own photos, and the site gradually grew from a private logbook into a public orchid species reference that Pfahl has kept running ever since.

A Small Editorial Group Behind the Pages

The site is maintained by Jay Pfahl with the help of a long-standing group of contributors: Copy and Photo Editor Susan Taylor, Synonym and broken link Co-Editor Christian Kirsch, Taxonomic Fact Checker Egon Krogsgaard, and HTML Editor Dave Alford. The site was last updated on 6 August 2026 and carries the ISSN 2167-6224. Pfahl has stated publicly that all income from the site is spent on reference books and web hosting, and nothing goes to his own pocket.

Species and Genera Covered

As of August 2026 the encyclopedia lists 26,297 orchid species in 863 genera. In December 2019 the figures stood at 22,866 species in 869 genera, so the species count has kept rising with new taxonomic work while a small number of genera have been merged over the same period. All entries are arranged alphabetically by genus and species, so that any name – old or new, accepted or synonym – leads back to the main reference page for that plant.

Sections of the Site

The main body of the site is a set of alphabetical species pages, each combining available photographs, type drawings, additional line drawings, hyperlinked synonyms, literature references and links to similar species. Alongside these pages the site carries sections on orchid hybrids, gold orchid jewelry (the Neptune Designs business run by the same owner), links to other orchid websites, orchid collecting in the wild, a bibliography and source book list, a climate page for orchid species, and a glossary of orchid terminology.

An Open Resource for Growers and Researchers

All species pages are freely accessible to the public; there is no paywall and no registration, and the site carries no third-party advertising. Growers, hobbyists and researchers use it to check the identity of a species, look up its native range and altitude, find cultivation temperatures, or trace a synonym back to its currently accepted name.
