Founding Background
The Texas Gulf Coast Fern Society (TGCFS) was organized in 1998 in Houston by a group of fern enthusiasts (also known as fernies or pteridologists) as a regional forum for people interested in ferns and fern allies. The Society’s by-laws, last revised in September 2014, still govern the organization today.
Mission and Activities
The Society’s mission is to cultivate, foster and promote interest in ferns and fern allies. Its educational programming includes “how-to” sessions, presentations by local, national and internationally known fern experts, plus field trips and tours that let members swap plants, ideas and growing experience.
Monthly Meetings and Venue
Regular meetings are held at 2:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month at the Judson Robinson Jr. Community Center in Houston; in recent years the Society has also offered virtual attendance via GoToMeeting, and field venues such as Mercer Botanic Gardens often host hands-on sessions. Final dates and venues are listed in each monthly newsletter.
Newsletter and Educational Resources
The Society has published a monthly newsletter (TGCFS Newsletter) without interruption since January 2005, with every issue archived as a PDF on the official website and now totaling more than 250 issues. Past issues include hands-on projects such as potting-soil recipes and spore propagation, together with field-trip reports and member contributions.
Governance and Membership
The Society is governed by a volunteer board; the current roster of board members is published in each month’s newsletter. Membership dues are set by category, and the full schedule—together with enrollment details for out-of-area and overseas members—is listed on the official website’s membership form. Visitors are always welcome at the regular meetings.
