De Ruiter Innovations B.V. is a rose breeding and propagation company headquartered in Amstelveen near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company develops cut roses, spray roses, pot roses, patio roses, garden roses, hip roses, and cut and pot Hypericum, Anigozanthos, and Hydrangea varieties. With roots in a family nursery founded by Gerrit de Ruiter in 1912 in Hazerswoude-Dorp, the firm now operates breeding, testing, production, and sales teams across the Netherlands, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Yuxi (China), supported by agents in thirteen countries and four regional representations covering Europe, Africa, South America, and China.

History

Founder Gerrit de Ruiter (1892–1965) was a Boskoop nurseryman whose hobby growing of polyantha roses led to a dark-red sport of ‘Orléans Rose’, introduced in 1917 as ‘Miss Edith Cavell’. After his death, his sons Gijs and Leen continued the business. The company was renamed ‘De Ruiters Nieuwe Rozen’ in 1985, acquired by Anton Pouw in 1986, became ‘De Ruiter New Roses International’ in 1992, and adopted the present name ‘De Ruiter Innovations’ in 2001. In 2015, the Dutch King awarded the company the title “Purveyor to the Royal Household”.

Breeding Programme

De Ruiter maintains trial stations in the Netherlands, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ecuador, and Colombia, allowing breeding decisions to be evaluated across altitudes, climates, and grower conditions. Selection criteria include colour stability, bud shape, productivity, disease resistance, vase life, and transport performance. The catalogue today lists 516 commercial varieties. Flagship lines include Ever Red and Revolution for the classic red segment, Mandala for higher-altitude East Africa, Happy Mood developed for Colombian growing conditions, and the X‑Pression garden-rose range serving premium retail and event floristry.

Global Footprint

The company runs six direct offices in the Netherlands (Amstelveen), Kenya, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Yuxi in Yunnan, China. A network of agents represents De Ruiter in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Zimbabwe/Zambia/Uganda. Regional representations coordinate sales and grower support across Europe, Africa, South America, and China. Headquarters staff in Amstelveen handle breeding direction, R&D, finance, and sales management for the Benelux, Germany, Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, France, Italy, and Spain.

Certifications and CSR

De Ruiter works under an ISO 9000 quality system and follows Fairtrade and MPS sustainability frameworks for floriculture. Corporate social responsibility priorities include employee development, research investment, and environmental protection. Breeding choices favour disease resistance and post-harvest performance, which reduces chemical inputs at production sites and lowers losses in transit. The company continues to host open days in Kenya, Colombia, and Ecuador and participates in industry events such as the HortiFlora exhibition in Ethiopia.
