Sofiero slott och slottsträdgård

Origins and Royal Heritage

Sofiero Palace lies five kilometres north of Helsingborg in the Scania region of southern Sweden, on a ridge above the Öresund strait. The site was originally a small Scanian farm called Skabelycke; in 1864 Prince Oscar of Sweden and his wife Sophia of Nassau, while visiting the area, were taken with the views across the strait towards Denmark and the wooded ravines, and bought the farm, renaming it Sophie-Ro. A single-storey summer villa was completed in 1865; between 1874 and 1876 it was expanded to two floors and thirty-five rooms in the form that survives today.

Plant Collections and Garden Zones

In 1905 the estate passed as a wedding gift to Prince Gustaf Adolf and Crown Princess Margaret, who began planting rhododendrons on a large scale and laid out the garden character still associated with Sofiero. The park covers roughly fifteen hectares and holds around ten thousand rhododendron plants, including about three hundred species and a similar number of hybrids, making it one of the largest rhododendron collections in northern Europe. The grounds are organised into themed sections, including the rhododendron valley, formal gardens, seasonal flower borders, a kitchen garden, vineyard, glasshouses, a sculpture walk and woodland paths.

Dining and Cultural Events

The palace building now operates as a restaurant, café and occasional exhibition space; the Sofiero Castle Restaurant is recognised regionally for its Nordic cuisine built on local and Scanian produce. The large grass areas of the park are used in summer for outdoor concerts, with artists such as Bob Dylan, Bryan Adams, James Brown and Norah Jones having performed there. A small collection of modern sculpture is displayed throughout the grounds alongside the planting.

Management and Public Donation

King Gustaf VI Adolf died in Helsingborg in 1973 and left Sofiero to the city of Helsingborg so that the general public could enjoy it as he had. From 1 January 2015 the palace and gardens have been operated within the municipal company Helsingborg Arena och Scen AB, with a dedicated team responsible for horticulture, food and beverage, events and visitor services. In 2009 a European garden travel review named Sofiero among the most beautiful parks in Europe, a designation the site commonly cites in its visitor information.

Location and Visiting

Sofiero is located within the city of Helsingborg on the Öresund coast in southern Sweden. Local buses run several times an hour from Helsingborg centre to the main entrance during peak season, and visitor parking is available on site. The park is open to the public year-round, with the rhododendron valley and formal gardens showing different highlights through the seasons; concerts, exhibitions and restaurant opening times follow a seasonal calendar published on the official website.
