历史沿革与办学源流
甘肃农业大学是农业农村部和甘肃省人民政府共建大学、国家重点建设的中西部百所高校之一、甘肃省高水平大学,是以农业学科为优势特色,理、工、经、管、文多学科协调发展的教学研究型大学。学校前身是 1946 年 10 月创建于兰州的国立兽医学院,这是国内首座独立的国立兽医高等学校,首任院长为盛彤笙院士。1950 年更名为西北兽医学院,1951 年更名为西北畜牧兽医学院,1958 年与筹建中的甘肃农学院合并组建甘肃农业大学,历经三易其址、四更其名。1939 年建立的国立西北技艺专科学校,以及 1945 年更名的国立西北农业专科学校,均为学校办学源流的重要组成部分,学校办学历史可追溯至抗战时期为西北地区培养农林牧草人才的国立西北农业专科学校。
学科体系与人才培养
学校全面加强学科建设,作为我国高校中首批学士、硕士学位授予单位,第二批博士学位授予单位,现有 8 个一级学科博士学位授权点、1 个交叉学科博士学位授权点、1 个博士专业学位授权类别、20 个一级学科硕士学位授权点、14 个硕士专业学位授权类别。现设有 24 个学院(教学部),69 个本科专业,其中国家级一流本科专业 11 个、国家级特色专业 5 个、省级一流本科专业 18 个、省级四新建设专业 8 个、通过认证专业 3 个。有 1 个国家重点学科,1 个农业农村部重点学科和 18 个省级重点学科。农业科学、植物与动物科学、环境与生态学、化学进入 ESI 国际学科排名全球前 1%。草学入选甘肃省属高校国家一流学科突破工程。学校在全国率先开设草坪科学与工程专业,是首批卓越农林人才教育培养计划改革试点单位,获国家级教学成果二等奖 1 项、全国高校黄大年式教师团队 2 个、国家级一流课程 13 门。

国际合作与社会服务
学校坚持开放办学,加强国际合作与交流,与多所国(境)外高校和科研机构建立合作关系,在旱作农业、草业科学、动物医学等领域开展联合培养和科研合作。学校积极服务三农和乡村振兴战略,建立了一批产业技术体系综合试验站和乡村振兴示范点,选派科技特派员深入农业生产一线,推广农业新技术、新品种,为西部地区农业现代化和乡村振兴提供了有力的科技支撑和人才保障。学校获批全国高校三全育人综合改革试点单位、教育部立德树人综合改革试点院系,新时代甘肃省高校党建工作示范院校,省级文明校园,甘肃省课程思政示范高校、省级智慧教育标杆校建设单位,40 多万毕业生扎根西部,涌现出中国科学院院士尚永丰、陈化兰,中国工程院院士南志标、孙其信、康相涛,首位华人英国皇家学会院士杨子恒,加拿大皇家科学院院士甘延太,俄罗斯科学院外籍院士韩天富,欧洲分子生物学组织外籍成员高彩霞等一大批知名校友,至今为国家培养各类人才 25 万余人。

History and Academic Origins
Gansu Agricultural University (GSAU) is a university co-built by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Gansu Provincial People’s Government, designated as one of the 100 key universities for national construction in central and western China and a high-level university in Gansu Province. It is a teaching-and-research-oriented university with agricultural disciplines as its dominant specialty, supported by coordinated development in sciences, engineering, economics, management, and liberal arts. The university’s predecessor was the National Veterinary College (Guoli Shouyi Xueyuan) established in Lanzhou in October 1946, the first independent national higher veterinary institution in China, with Academician Sheng Tongsheng as its founding president. It was renamed Northwest Veterinary College in 1950, then Northwest Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College in 1951, and in 1958 merged with the Gansu Agricultural College then under preparation to form the present Gansu Agricultural University, having undergone three relocations and four name changes. Earlier roots trace to the National Northwest Technical and Vocational School established in 1939 and the National Northwest Agricultural Vocational School of 1945, both important parts of the institution’s academic lineage serving northwest China during the Anti-Japanese War period.
Discipline System and Talent Development
The university is among the first batch of higher education institutions authorised to confer bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the second batch authorised to confer doctoral degrees in China. It now offers 8 first-level doctoral degree authorisation points, 1 interdisciplinary doctoral degree authorisation point, 1 doctoral professional degree authorisation category, 20 first-level master’s degree authorisation points, and 14 master’s professional degree authorisation categories. It is organised into 24 colleges (teaching departments) with 69 undergraduate programmes, including 11 national first-class undergraduate programmes, 5 national characteristic programmes, 18 provincial first-class undergraduate programmes, 8 provincial New Four Construction programmes, and 3 accredited programmes. The university holds 1 national key discipline, 1 Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs key discipline, and 18 provincial key disciplines. Agricultural Sciences, Plant and Animal Sciences, Environment and Ecology, and Chemistry are ranked in the top 1% globally of the ESI international subject ranking. Grass Science is included in Gansu Province’s national first-class discipline breakthrough programme for provincial universities. The university pioneered the Turf Science and Engineering programme in China, is among the first pilot institutions for the Outstanding Agriculture and Forestry Talent Education and Training Programme Reform, and has won 1 second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, 2 Huang Danian-style teacher teams of national universities, and 13 national first-class courses.

The university has 1,635 faculty and staff, including 14 high-level talents at the national leading-talent and Outstanding Contribution Expert level, 14 position scientists and comprehensive experimental station directors under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Modern Agricultural Industrial Technology System, 1 National Outstanding Teacher, 1 National Education System Labour Model, 1 National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent, 1 Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talent Support Plan recipient, 1 Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Meritorious Contributor, 5 Gansu Provincial Top Leading Talents, 49 Gansu Provincial Leading Talents, 23 Gansu Provincial Longyuan Young Talents, 32 Gansu Provincial Feitian Scholars, 15 Gansu Provincial Teaching Masters, and 422 Gansu Provincial Longyuan Talents. As of December 2025, the university has 18,128 undergraduate students, 4,307 master’s students, and 889 doctoral students. Focusing on the six pillar industries of cattle, sheep, vegetables, fruits, potatoes, and traditional Chinese medicine, the university strengthens organised research to serve agricultural and rural modernisation, and has been honoured as a National Advanced Basic-level Party Organisation and a National Benchmark Department for Party Building in Higher Education.
International Cooperation and Extension Services
The university pursues open education and strengthened international cooperation, establishing partnerships with multiple overseas universities and research institutions to conduct joint training and research in dryland farming, grassland science, and animal medicine. Actively serving the three rural issues and the rural revitalisation strategy, the university has established a number of industrial technology system comprehensive experimental stations and rural revitalisation demonstration sites, dispatched science and technology extension experts to the front lines of agricultural production, and promoted new agricultural technologies and varieties, providing strong scientific and technological support and talent guarantees for agricultural modernisation and rural revitalisation in western China. Recognised as a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education’s Three-Pronged Education Comprehensive Reform and a moral-education pilot department, the university has also been designated as a model institution for party building in Gansu Province’s higher education institutions in the new era, a provincial-level civilised campus, a Gansu provincial curriculum-ideology demonstration university, and a smart-education benchmark school construction unit. More than 250,000 graduates have been trained for the nation, including well-known alumni such as Chinese Academy of Sciences Academicians Shang Yongfeng and Chen Hualan, Chinese Academy of Engineering Academicians Nan Zhibiao, Sun Qixin, and Kang Xiangtao, the first Chinese Fellow of the Royal Society Yang Ziheng, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada Gan Yantai, Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Han Tianfu, and Foreign Member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation Gao Caixia.

The university is located in the Anning District of Lanzhou City, covering an area of about 2,394 mu with a building floor area of about 700,000 square metres. It has well-equipped teaching and research facilities, abundant library resources, and a beautiful campus environment, making it a distinctive high-level agricultural university.
